Single vehicle accident in Knapp claims one

A 25-year-old Menomonie woman has died from injuries she suffered in a single-vehicle crash in the Village of Knapp five days earlier.

Alyssa Hellekson succumbed to the injuries she sustained in the September 17 accident and died last Tuesday, September 22.

Hellekson was the driver and lone occupant of a truck that failed to yield for a stop sign at the intersection of County Road Q with US Highway 12 in the Village of Knapp and struck a tree and then construction material on the Mattison Construction site.

The accident occurred shortly before noon on Thursday, September 17.

The initial crash investigation showed that a 1993 Chevrolet truck operated by Hellekson was northbound on CTH Q and failed to stop for the stop sign at the intersection. Her vehicle continued northbound across USH 12 and entered the ditch. The truck then struck a tree and entered the Mattison Construction property were it struck the a pile of new guard rail sections.

Hellekson had to be extricated from the vehicle by Menomonie Fire and was flown from the scene by Mayo Helicopter to Mayo – Eau Claire with life-threatening injuries at the time.

The Dunn County Sheriff’s office state that Hellekson was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash but speed appeared to be a factor.

The crash remains under investigation by the Dunn County Sheriff’s Office.

The names of the individuals involved in the crash are not being released at this time pending notification of family.
