EAU CLAIRE – On June 18, 2020, the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin approved a new electric vehicle program for Xcel Energy customers that would simplify and significantly lower the cost for residential, commercial and fleet customers who would like to install EV charging equipment.
“We are excited to begin offering this program to our customers and communities later this year,” said Mark Stoering, president, Xcel Energy-Wisconsin. “Our long-term clean energy plan includes electrifying the transportation industry to benefit both the environment and customers. Making it easier for customers to own an electric vehicle and cheaper for them to charge it simply makes sense.”
Under the residential EV program, Xcel Energy will install and maintain a Level 2 EV charger at a customer’s home that includes embedded energy-monitoring capabilities which has been certified to work with the company’s billing systems. A service fee is added to a customer’s monthly bill to cover the cost of the charger and ongoing maintenance. Participating customers can save the most money when charging their vehicles exclusively during off-peak hours from midnight-8 a.m., at prices equating to less than $0.60 per gallon of gasoline.
Under the business and community EV program, Xcel Energy is also making it easy and affordable to connect commercial-sized EV chargers to Xcel Energy’s distribution system. Business and community customers will have the option to purchase charging equipment from Xcel Energy or can also choose to obtain their own charging equipment separately.
Xcel Energy will work closely with customers and other stakeholders to evaluate the overall success of the program following its launch later this year.
