GCHS 2020 graduates awarded over $380,000 in scholarships

GLENWOOD CITY — For the past several years graduating classes at Glenwood City High School have been the recipients of six figure scholarship totals and this year’s class is no different
Although no formal senior awards banquet or graduation ceremony was held due to the Coronavirus pandemic, it was recently announced by the Glenwood City School District that the Class of 2020 has received over $380,000 in scholarship monies with 33 of the 49 class members receiving monetary awards.
The lion’s share of the monies came from post secondary sources such as colleges, universities and the GI Bill.
Nicholas Melendrez collected the largest amount – $109,108, of which $107,008 was awarded through the GI Bill to further his education. He also received a $1,500 Russell Meyer Scholarship.
Two other class members came close to receiving six-figure scholarship tallies – Allyson Motz and Jabin Hojem.
Motz was awarded $98,250 in awards, the bulk of which will come from a
$92,000 College of St. Scholastic Benedictine Scholarship along with a College of St. Scholastic Leadership Award valued at $4,000. She also received a Russell Meyer Scholarship.
Jabin Hojem will receive $88,112 through the Amery Reserve GI Bill.
Class valedictorian Nyah Anderson was awarded a total of $22,000 which included a $10,000 St. Norbert College STEM Scholarship and the Wisconsin Academic Excellence Scholarship, valued at $9,000 ($2,250 per year for four year) that is awarded to each of Wisconsin’s high school valedictorians. Anderson also was awarded a Russell Meyer Scholarship.
Aiden Voeltz earned an $6,750 scholarship, the Technical Excellence Scholarship.
Mae Buttles was awarded seven scholarships totaling $5,500. That amount included an $1,800 award from the Glenwood City FFA Alumni, a $1,000 Wisconsin Holstein Association award and a $1,500 Russell Meyer Scholarship.
Andrew Berends earned $4,400 in scholarship awards. Berends’ largest amount will come from a $4,000 UW-Stout Polytechnic Scholarship.
Kaitlin Lee earned a total of $3,900 in scholarship arwards, including a pair of $1,500 scholarships – the Russell Meyer and Glenwood City FFA Alumni Scholarships.
Class salutatorian Leah Magsam earned $2,250, much of which came via a $1,500 Russell Meyer Award.
The Russell Meyer Scholarship fund once again benefited 13 graduates this year with each receiving $1,500 for a total of $19,500.
