COLFAX — Four candidates are running for three positions on the Colfax Village Board in the April 7 election.
The candidates are Margaret Burcham, Carey Davis, Mark Halpin and Gary Stene.
The Colfax Messenger sent out questionnaires to the candidates.
Here are Mark Halpin’s answers to the questionnaire.
• What is your occupation?
Project manager/job coach, retired.
• Tell us about your family.
Wife, Kathy, and six step-children.
• Why did you decide to run for election
I have served on the Colfax Village Board for more than 20 years. I enjoy serving my community and like being involved in the politics and decision making for the Village of Colfax.
• What makes you suited to serve on the village board?
I am a lifelong resident of Colfax. Having served the village for over 20 years, I know how to build partnerships with the community and my fellow board members to achieve results that positively impact the Village of Colfax.
• What issues do you see as being the most important for Colfax?
In speaking with the village residents, I’ve found the main concerns are street maintenance, the lagoon project, and the restoration of the municipal building. We all want good roads throughout the village. Good roads certainly help everyone to avoid costly vehicle repairs. The village board will continue to analyze our streets and prioritize their repair and replacement. The lagoon project should also be a high priority. Even though this area is not visible to Colfax residents, it is vitally important to our village and our water/sewer department. Once the river banks are reinforced and repaired, this issue will not need to be addressed again for many years. Our historic municipal building is a focal point of many activities within the village. It is the home of village administration, the Colfax Police Department, the Colfax Public Library and the Cozy Theater. Fund raising is ongoing in the hopes of installing an elevator, which will only enhance use of the building by village residents and our neighboring communities.
• What issues would you like to see addressed by the village board?
The need to encourage the development of residential housing and business development, both of which will allow the village to increase its tax revenue. This will provide tax relief for all residents.
• Why are you the best candidate?
After serving on each committee for the village board, I feel I have the necessary experience and knowledge to continue to be successful in serving the needs of the Village of Colfax. I receive many calls on my personal phone from concerned residents regarding a variety of issues. I am always open and available to listen to concerns, and I do my best to address those with the board.
