COLFAX — Five candidates are running for three positions on the Colfax Board of Education in the April 7 election.
The candidates are Jaclyn Ackerlund, Ken Bjork, Christie Hill, Jodi Kiekhafer and Gary Stene.
The Colfax Messenger sent out questionnaires to each of the candidates. Here are Ken Bjork’s answers to the questionnaire.
• What is your occupation?
I am a semi-retired dairy farmer and full-time transporter of grandchildren.
• Tell us about your family.
My wife, Mary, and I live on 1130th Avenue north of Colfax off Hwy. M. We have four grown children and 10 grandchildren three of which are in the elementary school in Colfax. Colfax is lucky to have so many grandparents involved in their grandchildren’s lives.
• What is your educational background?
I graduated from UW-Eau Claire with a degree in Education.
• Why did you decide to run for the Colfax Board of Education?
When I returned to the farm after teaching in Melrose-Mindoro, my father encouraged me to become a school board member. He was on the board himself for a number of years and found it to be a very worthwhile experience.
• What makes you suited to serve on the school board?
Education has always been important to my family. Our daughter is currently a fourth generation teacher. I believe that education opens up the world to anyone willing to take advantage of the school system. My personality is low key and allows for me to listen to what others are saying. I feel that I am able to collaborate with the team while always considering the cost/value of each program.
• Besides the budget, what do you believe to be the biggest challenges or issues facing the Colfax school district?
I feel strongly about finding and retaining an exceptional work force. Our teachers are the backbone of the school and I support their efforts to lead our children. Declining enrollments continue to be an issue as our aid and opportunities are tied to those numbers. The board and leadership teams strive to make Colfax Schools a great place to work.
• How would you suggest addressing those challenges or issues for the Colfax school district?
We must continue to listen to ideas and be willing to make changes that will improve our schools. I am very proud of the education system here in Colfax.
• Why are you the best candidate?
I feel that I would make a good candidate for the Colfax Board of Education. Every good board needs a balance of years of experience. I have been serving on the board for 35 years and would love to continue as the “old dog” in the pound.
