QUICK STOP — Senior Naomi Hillman came to sudden stop during a fast-break opportunity, deciding to pass the basketball to a Boyceville teammate instead of taking the shot. The Bulldogs lost last Thursday’s home game against the Elk Mound Mounders.

BOYCEVILLE — The Lady Bulldogs’ basketball team finished out the regular season at home last week, but unfortunately the team couldn’t give the hometown fans a win.
On Monday, February 17, Boyceville fell to the Amery Warriors by a score of 31-69 in a non-conference match up. Then, on Thursday, February 20, the Bulldogs played their final conference game against the Mounders from Elk Mound and lost 35-64.
Boyceville, who finished the regular season 7-15 overall and 4-10 in the Dunn-St. Croix conference, hosted Cumberland in the first round of the WIAA Division 4 playoffs on Tuesday, February 25th. The victor will move on to play second-seed Unity, who had a bye, in a regional semifinal game at the Eagles Nest this Friday, February 28. The regional championship will be played the following day -Saturday, February 29.

Despite scoring first, when Ana Evenson hit for two under the basket at the 16:25 mark, the Bulldogs got off to a slow start at home against the Warriors. After that first bucket, the Bulldogs went cold as their shots just wouldn’t fall and the Warriors turned up the heat and began to sink their shots, going on a ten-point run.
Jensine Boesl then got the Bulldogs back on the board when she sank both of her free throws.
The Lady Dawgs then slowly worked their way back into the game. Another free throw from Boesl and buckets from outside the arc from Kady Grambow, Emma Ouellette and Mya Lagerstrom had the Bulldogs trailing by just one at 14-15 with eight minutes left to play in the first half.
Unfortunately for the Lady Dawgs, things turned chilly again and the Warriors put up twenty unanswered points. The Dawgs didn’t score again until the final minute when Megan Hintzman dropped in a free throw. But it was the Warriors who scored last in the half when they hit from outside the arc again to take a 38-15 lead into the locker room.
The Bulldogs came out of the locker room and put up seven unanswered points to start the second half but then turnovers and missed shots helped the Warriors go on a 19-point run.
Ouellette finally broke the Warriors’ run with a shot from the top of the arc with just under four minutes left in the game. At this point, the Lady Dawgs were trailing 26-57.
The Warriors continued to be too much for the Lady Dawgs to handle and outscored them 14-5 in the final minutes.
After the game, head Bulldog coach Jolene Bird stated, “Unfortunately, they just have too many weapons for us to contain. If we tried to take away their inside play they hit a three. When we covered the arc they exposed us inside.”
Emma Ouellette led the Lady Dawgs in scoring with 11 points followed by Mya Lagerstrom with eight.

Elk Mound
Thursday’s regular season finale was another rough night as the Bulldogs, who honored their senior players, lost to the Mounders.
According to Coach Bird, the Bulldogs had too many unforced turnovers and then they got into foul trouble which made for a rough final two minutes of the first half. As a result, the Mounders had a 34-20 lead at halftime.
For the Bulldogs, things continued in much the same way during the second half. With the Mounders’ aggressive play on defense, the Lady Bulldogs never seemed to get into a good offensive flow. The Mounders were double teaming Emma Ouellette on their full-court press and the other Bulldogs just didn’t step it up to help this situation.
Elk Mound doubled up Boyceville on the second half scoreboard, 30-15, en route to the 64-35 win.
Bird commented that Kady Grambow had a great start to the game but then had to sit much of the first half due to foul trouble. Grambow led the Bulldogs with 12 points.
