BOYCEVILLE — What started as a ho-hum game turned into an exciting finish as the Lady Bulldogs defeated the Lady Hilltoppers in overtime in a conference rematch held in Boyceville on Tuesday, January 28th.
The two rivals split the regular-season series as Glenwood City won the first contest 39-36 back on December 10.
The action was slow to start as it seemed neither team could sink a bucket with many missed shots at both ends of the court.
The Lady Dawgs took an early 7-1 lead with buckets from Mya Lagerstrom, Ana Evenson and a base-line three pointer from Kady Grambow.
Now with just over seven minutes run off the clock, the Lady Toppers went on a run which started with Delanie Fayerweather sinking two free throws. Makiah Schutz followed with two off a fast break and Bethany Ullom added two more with a short jumper to tie the game at seven.
As play continued, the score remained close with the Bulldogs having a 13-11 lead with two minutes remaining in the half.
With just under a minute on the clock, Bulldog Megan Hintzman sank the first of her two free throws. Boyceville then stole the ball and Emma Ouellette dropped in a bucket. Very quickly the Dawgs had the ball again and Ouellette scored again on a fast break with about two seconds to spare. The Lady Dawgs took a seven-point, 18-11, lead into the locker room at halftime.
In the second half, Maddie Oehlke got things going for the Hilltoppers when she stole the ball off the opening procession and drove the court for two points. This was immediately followed by three from outside the arc from Bulldog’s Ouellette.
Each team then added three more points before the Bulldogs went on a seven-point run which was followed by a seven-point run by the Toppers. Hintzman broke the run with a layup to give the Bulldogs a ten-point, 33-23, lead with about seven and a half minutes yet to play.
As play continued, the teams were pretty evenly matched and the Toppers were having trouble making up any ground. Trailing 31-39, the Toppers took a timeout with 1:52 left on the clock. About thirty seconds later, Oehlke sank a short jumper. The Bulldogs then missed on their next possession and it was Oehlke again. After pushing down court she pulled up for a three pointer at the top of the arc. The Hilltoppers had cut the Bulldog lead down to just three points at 36-39.
With 56.7 seconds left in regulation play, Glenwood City took another timeout. This was followed by a Boyceville turnover which allowed Oehlke two more with a short jumper in the paint.
With the Lady Dawgs leading by one, the game was starting to wind down when Oehlke was at the free throw line for the Hilltoppers shooting two. After missing her first shot it was do or die for the Toppers. She sank her second free throw to tie the game at 39. The Bulldogs didn’t have enough time to get the ball down court for a good shot forcing the game into overtime.

Ouellette got things started for the Bulldogs at the start of the four-minute overtime period when she drove the ball down for two off the opening play. The Toppers then missed on their next possession and the Lady Dawgs countered with two under the basket from Grambow. This was all they needed as there was no more scoring from either team; between missed shots, turnovers and the Bulldogs trying to keep the ball wide and away from Hilltoppers defenders. Final score: Bulldogs 43, Hilltoppers 39.
After the game Topper head coach Dean Fayerweather was disappointed, especially in their inability to sink buckets in the first half.
“We missed too many easy shots under the basket and that really hurt,” stated Fayerweather. He was, however, pleased with how his team fought back and tied the game to go into overtime. “We just need to be strong and finish the game.”
Maddie Oehlke was the leading scorer for the Hilltoppers with 17 points followed by Makiah Schutz with eight.
For Bulldog head coach Jolene Bird, she wasn’t sure how this game was going to go.
“I thought the first time we played Glenwood we hurt ourselves. I was pretty disappointed in that loss and I think the kids were disappointed in that loss,” Bird said.
Another reason Bird wasn’t sure how this game would go was that this was their fourth game in less than a week and she wasn’t sure what the girls had left in the tank and how they would respond.
Bird praised the play of Kady Grambow, saying she played well against Oehlke. She also noted that Emma Ouellette played really well for them again. “She’s had a few games strung together, she’s tough and if she continues to be tough and everyone else picks up that mentality, we got some good things going on.”
Ouellette was the top point getter for the Dawgs with 13 followed by Ana Evenson with 11. It was Boyceville’s third conference win of the season.
