The Colfax Varsity Dance Team performed this past weekend at Hudson High School in the WACPC Western Regional Dance competition. The Western Region has the most small school Division 5 teams vying for a chance to perform at state. Thirteen teams performed in the Pom category and Colfax came in sixth place with their routine to “Crazy Frog” and will get a chance to perform this routine next weekend at the LaCrosse Center which will include the top teams from the Southern and Eastern Regions in the state. Only 9 points separated the number 2 spot from the number 6 spot in the Western D5 Pom division. All the Pom teams are competing at a similar performance level. Colfax will be working to elevate their performance this week as the WACPC State Competition takes place next weekend on Saturday, February 1, 2020.
Only 4 teams in the Jazz category could move on to state as there were only 8 teams competing in this category. Colfax performed their Jazz routine to “In The End”, coming in at 5th place and therefore missed taking this routine to state by 1.5 points. They got so close in a technical Jazz routine and, as their coach, I am super proud of this accomplishment. Yes, it is disappointing to not be able to see this routine on the state floor but it was exciting to see the team’s growth in technical moves and showmanship. The team also had one dancer, Haley Seston, perform her solo “Under Your Scars” at this competition. Soloists can perform for a chance to move on to the state competition as individuals. Out of 20 soloists, Haley was not chosen to move on. She will finish her four years on the dance team, during which she performed a solo each year and earned 1st team all-conference each year.
Dance is a sport where you show all your skills in 2 ½ minutes on the floor. The team gets one shot to impress the judges. Colfax will be working hard this week toward that goal. They are motivated to do the best job they can at the WACPC State Competition and I am confident they will represent Colfax well this coming weekend.
