MONDOVI — The Bulldog boys’ basketball team traveled to Mondovi where they took on the Buffaloes in a conference game on Tuesday, December 17th. The result left the Bulldogs searching for their first win of the season as they came up short against the Buffaloes, 27-68.
According to head coach Colby Dotseth, the Bulldogs got off to a great start in the first half, playing with a lot of energy and effort at both ends of the court.
After about ten minutes Mondovi then switched to a zone defense and Boyceville just couldn’t adjust. The Bulldogs struggled trying to penetrate the key and make good passes. Dotseth also noted that the Buffaloes’ size and length gave Boyceville fits and made them uncomfortable.
“We were never able to find a groove,” said Dotseth.
The Buffaloes outscored the Bulldogs 32-7 in the first half.
Not that Coach Dotseth is making excuses but he added that it didn’t help that one of their starters, Connor Sempf was out sick. Dotseth said that they missed his aggressive play and how he is able to get to the foul line. Dotseth conceded that once the Buffaloes went on a run the boys kind of quit on each other and they shut down, lacking the effort they displayed at the beginning of the game.
In the second half the Bulldogs scored 20 points to the Buffaloes’ 36.
Dotseth again praised the offensive play of Logan Knudtson and Brendan Sempf. Stating that both were aggressive but they just tried to put it all on their shoulders and it got to be too much.
Knudtson was the Bulldog leading scorer with 11 points followed by Sempf with eight. Dotseth also thought Walker Retz was very aggressive on both ends of the floor for the first time this year saying, “he did a really good job rebounding for us.”
Dotseth credited Dawson McRoberts and Beck Wendland for coming off the bench and working hard, giving the team some much needed energy.
“We need to look at this game as a growing experience and hopefully we can have a great rest of the week of practice and come out and compete in our next contest against Glenwood City,” Dotseth concluded.
