News for the week of December 8th – 14th:
The Holidays are in full swing here at the Big Yellow House! Residents gathered in the Square on Monday morning for craft time with Angela. Residents had fun piecing together stockings, among other festive projects. The afternoon found residents gathered on Willow for Rosary with Loretta. Then we moved to the Square to assemble “Snowman Soup” treat packets for the Kindergarten carolers coming later in the week. “Snowman Soup” is a baggie filled with hot cocoa mix, mini marshmallow “snowballs”, red and green candy “buttons”, and a peppermint “cane” stir stick! We hope our young friends enjoy them!
Tuesday morning means cribbage was the name of the game on Ridge Crest as Al, Toby, Vern and Gus enjoyed an hour of homemade cookies, hot coffee and fast flying cards! Meanwhile, residents enjoyed their weekly pampering manicure hour in the East lounge. Tuesday afternoon was Bingo in the Square, and many came away with bags full of goodies. In the evening, we were treated to beautiful Christmas music as the Sweet Adelines group caroled through the halls. Always a highlight that sparks wonderful holiday memories!
Pastor Conklin led us in our Wednesday morning church service. We appreciate him taking the time to come and share with us. We enjoyed his message and singing our favorite Christmas hymns. Then it was time to turn the Square into a concert hall for our Family Holiday Event. As residents and families arrived, Rich Schroeder was tuning up his guitar to treat us to an hour of Christmas music. We even sang along to some of our favorites. After the concert, Santa and his elf Daisy made an appearance in the East lounge, where residents also enjoyed wonderful appetizers prepared by the Dietary staff. Smiles were aplenty at the sight of the Jolly Ol’ Saint Nick!
Thursday morning brought a rousing game of bowling in the East lounge. Always fun to share a little friendly competitive banter with one another! Thursday afternoon found residents gathered in the Square for our weekly game of Farkle! This dice game has quickly become a favorite amongst the residents.
Friday morning we gathered for Gospel Sing a Long. This activity has been a weekly tradition for many years here at Colfax Health and Rehab, and the residents enjoyed listening to the talents of Kathy on piano and Bruce on the guitar. After Gospel Sing a Long, we were treated to cheery Christmas music from the Colfax Kindergarten classes, complete with costumes! It is always such a joy to have these kids come and visit. Friday afternoon, Dime Bingo was played in the Square. It is always a great way to end the week.
As I reflect on the busy holiday season here at the nursing home, I am deeply moved by all of the dedicated community groups and volunteers who pledge their time to come and share cheer with the residents of the Big Yellow House. Colfax is truly a special place to live, thanks to the big hearts of those who live here!
We wish you blessings and many wonderful memories to be made with your loved ones this holiday season.
Until next week,
Emily Gibson, Resident Services Director
