What a difference a week can make!
With another week of practice under their belts and some mat experience the Boyceville wrestlers were able to flip a 1-2 start in Cumberland into a 3-2 finish in this past weekend’s Devils Duals (formerly known as the Dells Duals).
After a 45-30 loss to Wisconsin Dells in the opening round of the 32-team bracket, Boyceville found itself competing in the Consolation Chart were the team went 3-1, beating Oshkosh North, Lomira and Iowa Grant/Highland before falling to Whitnall/Greendale in the first-place consolation dual en route to a second-place finish in that bracket, which translated into a 18th-place overall finish in the 2019 Devils Duals held Saturday, December 14 at the Chula Vista Resort.
The Bulldogs warmed up for this year’s trip to Wisconsin Dells with a road dual in Clear Lake last Thursday, December 12 and came away a 42-57 victor.
“The Dells tournament is always a fun trip,” said Boyceville head coach Jamie Olson. “We spend some quality time competing and bonding.”
Olson admitted that five tough duals in one day is a grind on his wrestlers but that it tests their toughness which is something everyone on the team needs early in the season.
“Going 3-2 was good, I was happy with that,” stated Olson. “We need to get better, but I feel we are headed in the right direction. We gained some valuable experience and became a closer team this weekend.”
The dual-style tournament not only yielded team success but individual achievements as seven Bulldogs finished with winning records.
Defending state champion Trett Joles and state place winner Josiah Berg both finished Saturday’s wrestling with unblemished 5-0 records while Peyton Ponath went 4-1, Josh Marzofka and Bash Nielson came away with 3-1 marks and Nate Stuart and Tyler Dormanen (who was seeing his first action of the season) both tallied three wins in five matches.
Joles, the reigning 195-pound D3 state titlist and current top-rated wrestler in that same weight class, registered three pins including one in 22 seconds and another in 28 seconds and a pair of forfeits while wrestling at 195 and 220 pounds.
Berg, a sophomore who also split time in two different weights (120 and 126), collected four pins one of which equaled Joles’ effort of 22 seconds to tie for the Bulldogs’ quickest pin of the tournament. Berg was ranked fifth at 120 pounds in the season’s first state rankings for Division 3.
At 126 pounds, fellow sophomore Peyton Ponath also scored four falls including one in 26 seconds to finish the day at 4-1.
Senior Josh Marzofka (220 and 285) and freshman Bash Nielson (170 and 182) each scored a pair pins while going 3-1.
In the tournament’s opening round, Wisconsin Dells bolted to a 21-6 advantage but Boyceville rallied to take a 30-27 edge with pins by Berg and Ponath and a pair of forfeits. But Wisconsin Dells won the final four matches which included a pin, a technical fall and a major decision to take a 45-30 win.
That loss sent the Bulldogs into the 16-team consolation bracket.
In the round of 16, Boyceville defeated Oshkosh North 42-29 by coupling three pins from Tyler Dormanen, Peyton Ponath and Bash Nielson with three forfeits.
The Bulldogs found themselves in a tight battle with Lomira in the quarterfinals. With a couple of lead changes, Boyceville was able to secure a 39-36 win as Marzofka, Berg, Ponath and Dormanen also scored pins.
The semifinal match against Iowa Grant/Highland was another close dual with Boyceville prevailing 42-37. The Bulldogs built a 36-6 lead early with four falls and two forfeits but the IG/H came roaring back with five wins in the final six matches to make it close. A forfeit to Bash Nielson at 182 pounds secured the win for Boyceville.
With that victory, Boyceville advanced to the consolation championship where it faced the larger Whitnall/Greendale. The Bulldogs quickly found themselves in a deep hole as Whitnall/Greendale rushed to 36-6 lead with pins in six of the first seven matches. Boyceville responded with wins in four (three by pins and the other on a major) of the final six contested matches but could not recover and lost 48-28.
Boyceville will be at the Osceola Duals this Saturday, December 21 before breaking until the Northern Badger Classic on December 27 and 28.
