FALL CREEK — A season-opening win fell in favor of the Elk Mound last Thursday evening, November 21, as the Lady Mounders upended host Fall Creek to earn a 52-46 road victory over the Crickets.
“It was a nice way to start the season,” said Elk Mound head coach Jordan Kongshaug. “The girls did a great job of attacking the basket and getting to the foul line.”
Elk Mound senior Sophie Cedarblade led all scorers with 21 points as she collected a trio of two- and three-point field goals and went six-of-eleven at the foul line.
Despite running into a bit of foul trouble, Hailey and Tori Blaskowski were able to contribute 11-points each to the Mounders’ offense output. Hailey Blaskowski, who had just one foul and two points in the first half, picked up three more fouls in the second but also netted nine points which might have been more as she went just five of 15 from the free throw line. Tori Blaskowski was whistled for all three of her fouls in the first half and none in the second scored five points in the first 18 minutes and six more following the intermission.
Taya Schaefer was also called for four fouls and hit one-of-two from the line.
Brooke Emery hit two three-pointers and Isabella Hollister had a lone field goal to account for the rest of Elk Mound’s scores.
“I also thought we defended well,” said Kongshaug. “They should be proud of their efforts.”
In a low scoring first half, the Mounders went to the break with an 18-15 lead over the host Crickets. Both teams picked up their scoring in the second half but Elk Mound was able to edge Fall Creek 34-31 in the latter half to take the six-point win.
Emily Madden and Emma Ryan led the Crickets with 12 points each.
Elk Mound (1-0) will enjoy a week off for the Thanksgiving holiday before returning to the court next Monday, December 2, to face non-conference foe Baldwin-Woodville in the Lady Mounders’ home opener. Just three days later, Elk Mound will travel to rival Colfax for the Dunn-St. Croix season opener on Thursday, December 5.
