COLFAX — Colfax High School students Morgan Schleusner and Abby DeMoe have been named Academic All-State honorees by the Golf Coaches Association of Wisconsin.
Schleusner and DeMoe both received a designation of “High Honors” by the association for the 2019 girls’ golf season.
According to a letter dated October 15 included in the Colfax Board of Education’s packet for the October 21 meeting, students are nominated by GCAW member coaches if they have a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have participation in at least 75 percent of their team’s varsity matches and if they are at least a sophomore in high school.
All together, 342 girls from 100 high schools were honored this year for maintaining high academic standards while competing in varsity golf.
The average cumulative GPA of this year’s honorees is 3.881.
William C. Yingst Jr., school district administrator, noted that in the “send off” to the state tournament for DeMoe, Coach Ryan Krall had researched the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association’s (WIAA) records and discovered Abby was the only girl in the state to qualify for the state tournament in girls’ golf for four years in a row.
DeMoe finished ninth in the state tournament.
“Congratulations on that. Quite an honor on finishing ninth out of the state. It’s quite a feat,” Yingst said.
The GCAW was formed by high school golf coaches in 1986, and in addition to honoring both girls and boys who are student athletes, also selects an All-State teams for both girls and boys.
An academic “team” honoring high school teams with the highest cumulative GPA receives recognition as well.
The girls’ all-state team will be announced in March of 2020.
