SPRING VALLEY — On Thursday, October 17th the Boyceville cross country teams competed in the Dunn-St. Croix conference meet.
Steven Rasmussen and Nathan Corr earned second team All-Conference honors at the meet and freshman Emma Gruenhagen just missed the honor coming in 15th.
As a team, the Boyceville boys finished in fourth place with 105 points behind Elk Mound, Spring Valley and Glenwood City.
“I felt like we did our best as a team,” commented Bulldogs’ head coach Corey Day. “I was impressed with the competition in our small conference. I think out of 22 teams at next week’s sectional my athletes will place similarly to what they placed in this eight-team event. It is good to have that kind of competition, it should give our runners an edge at the sectional.”
Steven Rasmussen and Nathan Corr led the Bulldogs with 12th and 13th place finishes. Steven’s time was 18:34.4 and Nathan came in at 18:34.6. Rounding out the top seven were Brian Johnson in 23rd, Cade Klefstad in 28th, Kaiden Standaert in 31st, and Nathaniel and Sam Chich in 43rd and 44th respectively.
The girls’ team finished in the sixth spot with 146.
Emma Gruenhagen, who came in with a time of 22:51.3, was the first Lady Bulldog to cross the line in 15th. She was followed by Naomi Hillman in 31st, Haylie Rasmussen in 39th, Noelle Wheeldon in 40th and Emma Chich in 61st. Rachel Montgomery in 62nd and Shiloh Wheeldon in 64th completed the team.
“The girls have made tremendous progress,” remarked Coach Day. “Last year we did not even field a team.”
In regards to both the girls and boys, Coach Day stated, “It is clear that we need to do more off season training if we are going to be competitive in this conference right now.”
Glenwood City won the girls’ team title while Elk Mound claimed a second straight boys’ crown. Molly Heidorn of Colfax was the individual girls’ titlist while Parker Schneider of Durand captured the boys’ gold.
Boyceville will host the WIAA Division 3 Sectional meet this Saturday, October 26th starting at 11 a.m. with the girls race. Boys will follow at 11:45 a.m. The top two teams along with the first five individual runners from non-qualifying teams will advance to the state cross country meet at the Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids next Saturday, November 2.
