PRAIRIE DU CHIEN — Senior Abby DeMoe continued to rewrite the Colfax girls’ golf record books.
DeMoe qualified for the WIAA Division 2 girls’ state golf championship for a record-setting fourth straight time after she finished in sixth place and grabbed one of the three individual state berths at the Division 2 Prairie du Chien Sectional held last Tuesday, October 8. DeMoe was joined by teammate and fellow senior Morgan Schleusner at the par-72 Prairie du Chien County Club.
The WIAA Division 2 state tournament was played this past Monday and Tuesday, October 14 and 15 at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison.
DeMoe, as she has done all season, led the eight individual players who had qualified for sectionals on the front nine, as she posted a 46 which was six strokes ahead of Morgan Cooley of Lancaster.
The first nine holes proved to be difficult for DeMoe as she posted a seven and an eight on two of the holes, but the senior made up for it on the back nine as she scored a 44. DeMoe ended her day with a score of 90, which was low enough to earn a first-place finish among the individual athletes and sixth on the final leaderboard to earn a state berth.
After a round of practice Monday afternoon, Morgan Schleusner had more of an idea what she would need to do to post a good score.
Schleusner finished the day out with an overall score of 115, which tied her for 31st place with Allison Kennedy of Prairie du Chien.
Morgan battled on the first nine holes as she had a score of 59 after struggling on hole five with a stroke count of 12. The back nine didn’t give her as much trouble as she scored 56 with a majority of 5s and 6s.
Besides DeMoe, Mary Hommen, who placed fifth with an 89 and was a member of the 5th-place Cambridge squad, and Rylee Haines of the third-place Arcadia/Independence team, who shot a 95 to take 8th, also earned individual state berths.
Winning the sectional team championship was Edgewood Sacred Heart with a score of 351 and Osseo-Fairchild/Fall Creak finished in second with a 403. Both teams earned state team berths as the top two finishers
