MONDOVI — The Boyceville football team’s attempts to put points on the board against the undefeated and unscored upon Mondovi Buffaloes (7-0, 4-0) proved unsuccessful this past Friday, as the Bulldogs (2-6, 1-4) conceded 53 unanswered points to the Buffaloes in a 53-0 loss at Mondovi High School last Friday, October 4.
“We knew this game was going to be tough. They are a much bigger, faster and stronger team than us,” Boyceville head coach Michael Roemhild said. “Nobody has been able to score a point on them the whole year…our goal was to do just that. We wanted to put points up on the board, not only for us, but for the other teams as well that have not been able to score on them.”
The Buffaloes attacked hard, early and often, scoring three first-quarter touchdowns and three second-quarter touchdowns to lead 40-0 before halftime.
With a running clock ticking in the second half, Mondovi managed two more touchdowns before the end of regulation. The Mondovi team used a combination of running and passing plays to push through the Bulldog defense, scoring three touchdowns in the air via quarterback Carter Johnson’s throws and five on the ground including two more by the Buffaloes QB.
Boyceville still managed to tally 128 offensive yards against a stout Buffalo defense, with Connor Sempf completing seven passes for 60 yards. He found Brendan Sempf on four occasions for 47 yards, an average of 10.5 yards per catch. Josiah Berg led the Bulldogs in rushing yards with 47.
Roemhild said their offense worked diligently at thinking of ways to surprise the Buffaloes, but just couldn’t quite make it work.
“We thought we had a couple of chances, but just couldn’t break a tackle, make that one catch, or see the guy open in time,” he said. Roemhild added that it came down to wanting to have his players emerge from the game healthy.
Even that was unsuccessful as Tanner Johnson was injured in the contest.
“We lost Tanner Anderson in this game on a big hit where he had a concussion,” said Roemhild. “It was scary for everyone involved, and was tough for the guys to get any energy back afterwards. Nobody wants to see their teammate carried off on a stretcher. We are still waiting on results and the whole team is praying for Tanner and his family.”
“We were already playing down five starters,” he noted. “Being a school of our size with only 32 guys, we have to stay healthy. It is time for us to forget about these past games and just get back to the basics.”
The Bulldogs will regroup and prepare for a home field matchup against the Durand Panthers (3-4, 2-2) this upcoming Friday.
