It’s been a long season for the Colfax lady golfers as they wrapped up their CloverCroix Conference season with matches in Osseo and Lake Hallie.
The first of two matches took place in Osseo last Monday afternoon, September 23, and unfortunately resulted in a fifth-place finish once again for the Vikings.
But as Thursday, September 26, came around the ladies went into it with a different mindset knowing it was the conference championship in Lake Hallie, and would also be a full 18 holes of golf. The Lady Vikes would step up their game and beat out Stanley-Boyd by 27 strokes to take fourth-place for the first time in the 2019 season.
Next up for the Vikings is the WIAA Division 2 Arcadia Regional Tournament which will be held today, Wednesday, October 2, at Drugan’s Castle Mound in Holmen where the ladies will continue their journey that hopefully ends in Madison. The first two teams and top three individuals, who are not members of a qualifying, will advance to next week’s Baldwin-Woodville sectional tournament at Pheasant Hills Golf Course near Hammond. The state meet will be held October 14 and 15 at University Ridge in Verona.
Osseo
The Colfax Ladies golf team traveled to Osseo on Monday afternoon, September 23, and fell 13 strokes shy of getting a fourth-place finish with a team score of 260.
Abby DeMoe finished second behind Ariel Heuer for the second week in a row. DeMoe finished with 44 strokes and Heuer had 39 strokes.
Finishing in the first and second spots, team wise, were Osseo-Fairchild/Fall Creek with a score of 185 and Flambeau with 205 strokes.
Morgan Schleusner was consistent for the second week in a row as she finished with a score of 52 for a seventh-place tie with Izzy Popple and Eleice Dahl, both from O-F/FC.
The Osseo course made things a struggle for Hannah Lemler, Colfax’s number three golfer, as she finished in 23rd place with a score of 67.
But the course seemed to work in favor of Lillie Hayden as she improved from last week’s round in Eau Claire. Hayden finished in 24th place with a score of 97.
Despite the last place finish for Colfax, the team did improve it’s overall score by four strokes in Monday’s match-up.

Lake Hallie
In the last match of the conference season, the Lady Vikes golf team pulled off a fourth-place finish at the CloverCroix Conference Championship in Lake Hallie last Thursday, September 26.
“Our goal all season had been to beat a team at a conference match, and we finally pulled that off at the last match of the year,” said Colfax head coach Ryan Krall. “I think that was really satisfying for the girls to see the positive progression in their games and have it shine the brightest at the final match of the conference season.”
Abby DeMoe has battled back and forth for first with Osseo-Fairchild/Fall Creek’s Ariel Heuer since the start of the season and was able to take first when it came to the conference championship by two strokes and a score of 79. Heuer finished with a score of 81.
“I know winning the overall season Player of the Year award in the conference was a goal of her’s,” said Krall of DeMoe. “And to fall just short of that stings, but there are bigger fish to fry for Abby. I’m hoping she is rounding into form at the perfect time.”
Morgan Schleusner settled in to a cushy fifth place finish for Colfax with a score of 100, posting 51 on the front nine and 49 on the back nine.
Schleusner knew going in today that she was in a dog fight for the remaining spot on 1 st team all-conference, according to Krall, and with a fifth place finish she earned the last spot heading into regionals.
Finishing with a 127 was Hannah Lemler for 17th place.
“We expect her to post good scores for us, she knows we need her to compete as a team and she definitely didn’t let us down,” Krall commented of Lemler’s play.
Lillie Hayden was happy with her score of 164, stating that she had set a goal for herself that day to stay under 200 and she accomplished just that for a 23rd place finish.
“Lillie hit more good shots today than I’ve seen her hit all season, she has had such a positive attitude all year and fought through a ton of ‘beginner’s struggles’ knowing that we had to use her score every time out,” commented Krall. “A lot of kids would have gotten discouraged in Lillie’s position, but she has stuck it out and steadily improved.”
The pressure will only get greater for the Lady Vikes, said Krall, but he believes that they are ready for it due to the determination and grit of all four golfers.
“We have an unwillingness to give up when times get tough. That’s my favorite thing about this group of kids, I hope that I’ve got more than one week left with all of them heading into post-season play.”
