RICE LAKE — Humid was the word of the day in Rice Lake as the Bulldog Harriers competed in Rice Lake last Tuesday, September 17th at the UW-EC Barron County campus.
The weather definitely affected the Bulldogs as two of the girls failed to finish the race and the boys times in general were slower.
Boyceville Head coach Corey Day reflected that his girls did not fare well. Between not racing for two weeks (last week’s Fall Creek race was canceled) and not having this heat for the past few weeks, the girls had a rough go at it.
On a positive note he remarked, “The girls have been working hard and I know they will bounce back.”
Naomi Hillman was the first Bulldog and the 25th runner to cross the line in the small school division with a time of 24:49.2
Despite the slow times, the boys still managed a fifth place finish out of sixteen complete teams in the small school division. With a time of 19:29.2 Nathan Corr led the team with a 21st place finish with Steve Rasmussen on his heels just .3 seconds behind. Cade Kelfstad was next in for the Bulldogs in the 45th spot with Brian Johnson coming in 50th. The Chich twins came in just a second and a half apart from each other to claim the 61st and 62nd positions. At the finish Sam was ahead and Nathaniel had to push past a wall of McDonell Central runners to finish behind his brother. Kaiden Standert rounded out the varsity team.
Coach Day remarked that with such a large field of runners it was hard to tell how well they did. [Large school division and small school division run together but results are tabulated separately]. “I went home thinking we are not very good, but when I looked at the results by small school we beat 2/3’s of the field.”

Coach Day had the following comments about his middle school teams: “Middle school had an eye opening experience with over 400 boys and girls in their race. Our girls found each other and packed up to place 40, 41, 42, 43, and 46 out of 201 girl runners to place 5th overall only losing to larger schools. To put in perspective 40 out of 200 is the 80th percentile and some of them it was their first ever experience Michael Montgomery lead the boys MS but we did not field 5 runners for a team.”
“I was very happy with the effort all the runners put out there.” stated Day. “I had no doubts about their effort. Some of the kids pushed themselves to failure and did not finish or barely finished. I never want to see a runner go down or hit the wall, but it tells me they pushed past a breaking point. Most people would slow down long before that breaking point. These kids have heart.”
The Bulldogs ran in Mondovi on Tuesday, September 24th and will run again on Thursday, the 26th at Durand.
