COLFAX — Colfax failed to find their way to the end zone against the Mondovi Buffaloes on Friday, September 13, and watched as Mondovi, ranked ninth in the latest Division 5 coaches’ poll, slammed the door shut, 59-0, on the Vikings in Colfax’s Dunn-St. Croix and home opener.
Colfax is currently 0-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
“Mondovi was a great team,” said Colfax head coach Matt DeMoe. “Dynamic at every position, and we struggled to tackle them.”
The Vikings defense looked strong in the first five minutes of Friday night’s game against the powerful and potent Buffalo offense as it held Mondovi scoreless until Jarod Falkner snagged a 27-yard pass from quarterback Carter Johnson for the first 8 six-point scores for the Buffaloes. Raith Bauer, who made seven of his eight extra point kicks, added the extra point for a 7-0 Mondovi lead .
That lead would only grow from there.
Johnson ran in a 5-yard score and with Bauer’s kick the Buffs were up 14-0.
The advantage grew to 21-0 before the first quarter came to a close as Johnson threw his second touchdown strike of the period, this one to Owen Schultz for 34 yards, with Bauer adding the kick.
Mondovi added four more touchdowns – all via the air – as Johnson threw TD tosses to Tanner Marsh (40 yards), Jarod Falkner (9 yards) and a pair to Brandon Wagner (45 and 16 yards) to make it 48 to zip Mondovi at the intermission.
Carter Johnson finished with an excellent passer rating of 149.3 after going 8-for-12 for 162 yards and five touchdowns throws.
Tommy Bahr scored on a nine-yard run in the third quarter to make it 55-0 before the Buffaloes closed out the scoring with a safety in the third by Mason Fedie and another by Tristen Teigen in the final quarter for the 59-0 final.
Nine Mondovi players carried the ball for a total of 202 yards with Marsh getting 60 yards, Bahr 49 and a TD and Johnson finished with 45 and a TD. In all, Mondovi finished with 379 yards of total offense.
Conversely, Colfax struggled all game to move the ball, ending the game with 124 yards of offense. Much of that yardage came via the air as Albricht went 28-of-38 passing for 156 yards.

The run game for Colfax was shut down at every opportunity as both Mitch Harmon and Noah Albricht ended up with negative yards. Harmon had -2 and Albricht had -30.
Despite a struggling offense Austin Schindler and Colin Bohl led the Vikings defense with 13 tackles between the pair.
The Vikings had a hard time keeping control of the ball as the snap to quarterback Noah Albricht slipped through his fingers for the fumble, but Albricht was able to fall on the ball after a loss of 16 yards to bring up 2nd and 26.
With 9:41 left in the second quarter, Albricht was making a run for the end zone with the help of receivers Ryan Albricht, Mitch Harmon and Cole Kiekhafer.
But on a pass intended for Harmon, the Buffaloes intercepted the ball which would eventually result in another seven points for Mondovi.
“For us offensively, we executed what we wanted to,” DeMoe said. “We would have like to get in the end zone, but still moved the ball in our pass game.”
Colfax’s passing game was strong as they managed 156 yards between four receivers.
Cole Kiekhafer and Ryan Albricht led the receivers with 61 yards for Kiekhafer and 42 for Albricht.
Colfax will be in Boyceville this Friday, September 20, to take on the Bulldogs who are 1-1 in the Dunn-St. Croix.
