ELK MOUND — It was a tough night on the road for the Boyceville Bulldogs, as they met with an authoritative Elk Mound football team and endured a 49-12 loss Friday at Elk Mound High School.
The Bulldogs (2-2, 1-1) refused to close up shop following an early first quarter Mounder (2-2, 1-1) touchdown on a 54-yard punt return. They responded by marching the ball down the field and taking it to the house on a 2-yard run from quarterback Connor Sempf. However, the following five touchdowns would belong to Elk Mound as they took a commanding 42-6 lead by the end of the third quarter.
“We knew coming into this game that Elk Mound was going to be a tough team,” Boyceville head coach Michael Roemhild said. “We knew they were going to have two times the guys we have, they were going to be bigger, stronger and faster than us. After every Elk Mound touchdown, they tried their best to respond, even in the last two minutes of the game.”
Connor Sempf would score once again for the Bulldogs on a 36-yard dash with 7:14 to go, but just moments later, the Mounders returned the Bulldog’s kick off for an 85-yard gain and polished scoring off with a good point after.
Elk Mound tallied 340 rushing yards in their victory over Boyceville, 273 of which came from Blaze Todd who also scored five rushing touchdowns.
Connor Sempf scored the Bulldog’s only two touchdowns of the night, both on the ground. He led in rushing yards with 38, followed by Brendan Sempf with 37. Conner Sempf completed six of 11 passes for a total of 149 yards, connecting with Brendan Sempf for 73 yards on four receptions.
“I did not have them prepared enough for this week,” Roemhild admitted. “After our first score, our guys had the confidence that they could play with Elk Mound. In order to do that, we needed to create turnovers or have big stops on defense…we did not do that. We did not stop them on one possession. The main positive was that our guys never gave up. We will continue to work and learn the game. The exciting part about this team is that there is so much room for growth.”
Roemhild added that the Bulldogs will come out ready for Colfax (0-4, 0-1) this upcoming Friday and will be hungry to grab another win in front of their home crowd for Homecoming. Colfax will be looking for their first win of the season as they recover from two consecutive shutouts.
