BOYCEVILLE — The breeze and sunshine made for a perfect day as the Elk Mound and Colfax cross country teams inaugurated their 2019 seasons on the sectional course at Tiffany Creek Elementary in Boyceville last Wednesday, August 28.
The Elk Mound boys, one of the early favorites in the Dunn-St. Croix, commanded the top spot at the annual Boyceville Alumni Invitational with 60 points as senior Cade Hanson finished first in a field of 196 runners with a time of 17:26.59.
“What a great way to start the season,” said Mounders’ head coach Jeremiah Fredrickson. “The athletes all ran very well.”
It was a great start to the season for the Colfax ladies as well as they finished in eighth place overall with 226 points. Elk Mound’s girls struggle in their first meet as they finished in 15th place with 397 points. Colfax’s boys’ did not have a complete team.
Durand took the girls’ team title with 69 points as all five varsity runners finished 22nd or better including winner Madison Sand.
“Obviously the men ran some good races as we were able to win as a team,” Elk Mound’s Fredrickson explained. “I think it is a great starting point for them. Our depth was apparent with the number of athletes under 20 minutes.”
Hanson was a runner on a mission in Boyceville beating runner-up Andrew Schlitz of Eau Claire Regis by three seconds.
The remaining four athletes that scored for the Mounders men finished in the top 25 including three in the first 16 places.
Lukas Wagner finished in tenth place and was followed by senior Andrew Pathos in 13th place,
Wagner finished with a time of 18:32.17 and Pathos finished in 18:49.67.
Hot on the heels of Pathos was senior Seth Hazen finishing in 14th place with a time of 18:52.90, and Aiden Schiferl rounded out the Mounder scorers with a 22nd place finish and a time of 19:09.10.
Colfax’s girls also had a wonderful start to the 2019 season.
“Great to get started and a lot of good things to build on,” said Colfax head coach Joe Doucette.
“We are not in great shape and we do not have a big number of kids, but the ones we have are great and will improve a lot.”
Molly Heidorn finished in the top ten for Colfax as she crossed the finish line with a time of 21:49.58, following her in fifteenth was Aynsley Olson with a time of 23:02.93.
“We knew Molly was going to be good coming off a great middle school career and she was tough,” Doucette explained. “Aynsley was very good and the others were improved.”
Also scoring points for the Vikings were Juelia Berger in 54th place with a time of 26:00.40, Jillian Bowe in 73rd place with a time of 27:03.05 and Jenna Goodell in 81st place with a time of 27:28.36.
Elk Mound’s girls struggled as only one runner finished in the top thirty.
“The ladies side ran well with a lot of runners still learning to race, I think there is room for a lot of growth as we move forward,” said Fredrickson.
Kristin Martinson finished her first meet strong as she took thirtieth place for the Mounders with a time of 23:58.03.
Finishing in 79th and 95th place for Elk Mound was Laney Moyer and Taya Schaefer, Moyer finished in 27:19.15 and Schaefer finished in 28:32.22.
Scoring the last set of points were freshmen Amber Best and Kyra Hadenfeldt in 96th and 97th place respectively with times of 28:45.74 and 28:46.87.
The Colfax boys did not score as a team as there are only four runners for the squad, but they still pushed themselves in the first meet of the year.
“Veterans Noah Heidorn and Dennis Sonnentag were solid and improved from last year,” said Doucette. “Freshmen Ashton Yarrington has a ton of potential.”
Heidorn crossed first for the Vikings in 50th place with a time of 20:19.39 and Sonnentag finished in 56th place with a time of 21:39.33.
Yarrington was the only other runner competing for Colfax and finished in 84th place with a time of 21:39.33.
“Right now, we do not have a team score, but we are hoping to get a few more boys out,” explained Doucette. “We have to get in better shape, it is a solid starting point and we feel we can build on it.”
Colfax competed on Saturday morning, August 31, in Marshfield as well.
Elk Mound will compete Thursay, September 5th at St. Croix Central while Colfax is off until September 14.
