ELEVA-STRUM – The Colfax Vikings went into their second football game of the season leading at halftime, but could not hold on after the intermission.
Colfax struggled to shut down the run game of Eleva-Strum in the 21-14 non-conference loss on the Cardinals’ home field last Friday, August 30.
“We had a solid start to the game,” said head coach Matt DeMoe. “But Eleva-Strum established a run game, and were able to sustain drives.”
The Vikings, now 0-2, started things off strong as they scored with 1:55 left on the clock in the first quarter when quarterback Noah Albricht hit a successful pass to Cole Kiekhafer resulting in a 98-yard touchdown. The senior-to-senior connection gave the Vikings a 6-0 advantage after the try for the two-point conversion failed.
In the second quarter, Colfax wasted little time in putting its second touchdown on the scoreboard. With just 46 seconds gone on the second-quarter clock, Albricht went aerial once again this time finding Trey Hovde open for a 49-yard touchdown. The Vikings tried for the two-point conversion once again and were successful this time on a quick pass from Noah Albricht to Ryan Albricht giving Colfax a 14-0 lead.
Noah Albricht wrapped up the evening with eight completions for 215 yards and the two throwing scores but was also intercepted three times by the Eleva-Strum defense.
The Cardinals finally responded with their first score of the contest just past the midway point in the second quarter.
Andrew Schoen scampered for a 66-yard touchdown at 5:48 and with a successful extra-point kick, the homesteading Cardinals pulled to within seven points at the halftime.
That score seemed to give Eleva-Strum momentum which they exploited in the second half.
Andrew Schoen and Nick Higley both scored rushing touchdowns in the third quarter as the Cardinals took the lead for good.
Schoen’s second TD of the game came on an 18-yard run at 6:22 of the second half. The extra point sailed through and Eleva-Strum had knotted the contest at 14 all.
Higley rambled for 32 yards with what proved to be the game-winning score at 2:32 of the third. Again, the extra point kick was successful giving the Cardinals a 21-14 lead.
That is exactly how it would end as neither team scored in the final 12-minute period.
“We needed to make some more plays on offense than we did,” said DeMoe. “We played a better first half.”
Mitch Harmon led the Vikings’ ground game with 92 yards on 18 carries.
Colfax will wrap up their road games this Friday evening, September 6, with a game against a strong Neillsville/Granton squad.
