MENOMONIE — The small animal auction at the Dunn County Fair has raised $3,900 for the Cammie B. Johnson Juvenile Diabetes Fund.
The Cammie B. Johnson Juvenile Diabetes Fund gives out scholarships to graduating high school seniors who are going to nursing school, helps youngsters with diabetes go to special summer camps where all of the counselors also have Type I diabetes, and helps families pay for medical supplies needed to treat Type I diabetes.
Madison Shipley, who graduated from Colfax High School in May, received a Cammie B. Johnson Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,000.
Proceeds from six of the animals sold on the auction July 27 — all turkeys and all donated by members of the Steinmeyer family — went to the Cammie B. Johnson diabetes fund.
All together, 19 animals were sold at the small animal auction.
Lee Real Estate and Auction Service auctioned off the poultry and rabbits.
The auction bill does not identify the place where the sellers are from and does not include the seller’s 4-H club or the names of the seller’s parents.
The buyers on the auction were only identified by number.
A six-month-old hen turkey donated by Gracie Steinmeyer sold for $800 and was purchased by buyer No. 6.
A six-month-old tom turkey donated by Jack Steinmeyer sold for $950 to buyer No. 10.
A six-month-old hen turkey donated by Sam Steinmeyer sold for $700 to buyer No. 7.
Gracie and Jack donated two other six-month-old turkeys, one a tom and the other a hen, that sold for $500 and $450, respectively, to buyer No. 17 and buyer No. 18.
Sam Steinmeyer sold his grand champion six-month-old tom turkey for $500 to buyer No. 23.
Cammie Johnson was the daughter of Mark Johnson, owner of the Zanzibar Restaurant and Pub in Menomonie, and Lori Johnson of Grand Forks, North Dakota. Cammie was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes when she was 10 years old, and she died of diabetes complications just five days before her 21st birthday.
At the 2017 small animal auction, it was reported that the Cammie Johnson Memorial Scholarship Fund had distributed more than $41,000 in scholarships to area high school students planning to go to nursing school or medical school.
The 11th Annual Cammie Johnson Diabetes Event will be held this year on September 28 at Tanglewood Greens.
