A pair of Glenwood City elementary and middle school student athletes competed in and placed at the 2019 Knights of Columbus State Free Throw contest held at the end of March.
Brody Olson, who just finished the fifth grade at Glenwood City Elementary, placed second in the boys’ 10-year-old division at the Knights of Columbus State Free Throw contest held Saturday, March 30th in Wisconsin Rapids. This was the second straight year that Brody has competed in the state championship match. A year ago, he came home with the state title in the nine-year-old competition. He is the son of Patrick and Holly Olson. His mom also won a KC State Free Throw title back in 1986.
At that same time and location, eighth-grader Elek Anderson, the son of Julie and Craig Anderson of Glenwood City, finished third in the boys’ 14-year-old division.
Both boys won the local and district competitions. Elek and Brody each sank 12 of their 15 free throws in the local Glenwood City competition to take first and advance to the district contest in New Richmond. There Anderson connected on 23 of his 25 charity tosses to claim gold in his age division while Olson netted 17 of 25 tries to take first.
That earned the pair a berth in the Diocese (regional) Competition held in Ladysmith. Olson achieved perfection in the Diocese contest by hitting all 25 of his free throws to capture the 10-year-old boys’ championship. Anderson also claimed his third consecutive first-place finish after he made 19 of his 25 free throws attempts in the boys’ 14-year-old division.
In the state competition held March 30th in Wisconsin Rapids, Brody Olson sank 21 of 25 charity tosses, the same score that won him the nine-year-old crown the previous year, to become the 10-year-old state runner-up in the 2019 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Contest.
Elek Anderson also performed at a high level in the state competition as he made 19 of his 25 shots from the free throw line and finished third following a shoot out.
Olson also claimed another state runner-up free throw title earlier this year. Competing in the boys’ 10-11 year-old age group, Brody took the silver in the Wisconsin Elks Association State Finals held February 9th in Wausau by making 21 of his 25 attempts.
In order to reach the championship tournament, Olson won the Elks’ local tournament held in Eau Claire after he sank 17 of 25 shot attempts. In the regional competition held in Chippewa Falls, Olson made 18 out of 25 to take third place but was able to advance to state after one of the top two place winners was unable to attend the championship competition in Wausau.
