COLFAX — The Colfax Free Fair will have only one 100th anniversary celebration, and that has prompted the Colfax Village Board to donate $1,000 toward the fireworks for the fair.
“It is the 100th anniversary of the fair, after all,” commented Scott Gunnufson, village president, at the Colfax Village Board’s May 28 meeting.
This year, the fair will be featuring “double fireworks” on Thursday and Friday nights, noted Margaret Burcham, village trustee.
The Colfax Free Fair runs from June 20 through June 23.
The Colfax Fair Board had talked to Gary Stene earlier, and it should have been on the agenda before this, said Lynn Niggemann, village administrator-clerk-treasurer.
Stene, the former village president, did not run in the April 3 election.
Where would the money come from in the budget? asked Village Trustee Chad Berge.
The village board would have to decide to either eliminate a line item in the budget or authorize taking the money out of the undesignated fund, Niggemann said.
The village has an unassigned fund balance (general fund), assigned funds and restricted funds that can only be spent on certain items, she said.
“Do we have $1,000?” Margaret Burcham asked.
“Yes,” Niggemann replied.
Since it is the Colfax Free Fair’s 100th anniversary and the fair board has not asked for money toward fireworks in previous years, Gunnufson said he was in favor of the village making a donation for the fireworks.
The Colfax Village Board unanimously approved a motion to donate $1,000 to the Colfax Fair Board for the fireworks at this year’s Colfax Free Fair.
Gunnufson and Village Trustees Burcham, Berge, Keith Burcham, and Anne Jenson voted in favor of the motion.
Village Trustees Mark Halpin and Carey Davis were absent from the meeting.
Fireworks at the fair will be held at 10 p.m., Thursday, June 20, and at 10 p.m. Friday, June 21, with Saturday being the rain date for fireworks.
Other special events at the Colfax Free Fair will include free-stage entertainment, beginning with Kevin’s Juggling and Balloons at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 20, and Lizzy’s Comedy Hypnosis Friday, June 21 at 4 p.m., with music by Jim Nelson at 6 p.m.
Saturday’s free stage entertainment will begin at 4 p.m. with Magic Isaiah, followed by music by Jordan Herrick at 6 p.m. The introduction of summer sports teams and awards will be at 7 p.m. Saturday.
In Capable Hands will perform on Sunday, June 23, at 1 p.m., and Snake Discovery will be at 2 p.m. Sunday.
