SPOONER — For the Colfax Lady Vikings’ softball team, the end of the season came too quickly in their WIAA Division 3 first-round outing against the Spooner Rails last Tuesday, May 21.
Colfax let the game slip away in the fifth inning after they had tied things up 1-1. A ground ball to Marissa Harmon allowed the Rails to plate the winning run and earn a 2-1 win over the Vikings.
Colfax sophomore Bailey Bradford doubled in the top of the fifth inning on a line drive to left field. Jozie Buchanan then followed with a RBI single to drive Bradford home with the Vikings only run of the game.
“I thought we played a good game defensively, I give Spooner a lot of credit for making plays when they needed to,” said Colfax’s head coach John Dickinsen. “It was an unfortunate bounce with a runner at third that drove in their winning run.”
Buchanan had a majority of the pitching duties for the Vikings as she went five innings, throwing a mere 70 pitches 49 of which were called strikes. In her five innings, Buchanan had four strikeouts while giving up two earned runs.
Starting in the circle though for Colfax was freshman Jenna Goodell. She pitched a full inning before being relieved by Jozie Buchanan. In Goodell’s time on the mound, she managed to strike out one batter and give up no hits or walks to the Rails.
“Jozie pitched a great game and gave us the opportunity to win,” said Dickinsen. “We had good at bats, some hard hits and they (Spooner) made the plays to get the win.”
Taylor Irwin and Kaitlyn Field also earned hits for the Vikings. In the first inning, Field hit a single to left field while Irwin hit a single to center field in the top of the third inning.
With the loss, the Vikings have ended their season at 5-12 overall and 5-11 in the Dunn-St. Croix conference, good for sixth place.
Colfax also says goodbye to two seniors from the 2019 team, Emmie Edwards, first baseman, and Kaitlyn Field, outfielder.
