COLFAX — Things started out well for Colfax when it hosted rival Elk Mound for the second of its regular season baseball match-ups.
The Vikings built a 4-1 advantage over the Mounders thanks in large measure to a three-run second inning.
Elk Mound narrowed the gap to a single run with a pair of scores in the top of the third and it would stay that way until the fifth frame. That is when Elk Mound erupted for six runs highlighted by Brett Lew’s grand slam home run. The Mounders added two more scores in the sixth before finishing off the Vikings with five in the seventh to earn the win and sweep with a 16-7 victory.
Elk Mound was aided by 15 hits and five Colfax errors. The Vikings, who scored their final three runs in the bottom of the seventh, finished with 11 hits.
In the top of the first, the Mounders’ Chase Rhude hit a double to score teammate Nate Lew and give Elk Mound a 1-0 lead.
Colfax’s Bryce Sikora scored on a wild pitch in the bottom half of the first to tie things up.
Colfax then took the lead in the second inning off a George Scharlau triple to left field and a sacrifice fly from Caden Erickson. The Vikings score three times in the inning for a 4-1 lead.
After Elk Mound answered back with two runs in the top of the third, the Mounders blew open the game in the fifth inning. With bases loaded, Ben Heath was walked bringing in the game-tying run. Mounders’ senior Brett Lew then stepped to the plate and cleared the bases with one swing of his bat as the ball sailed over the 310-foot mark of the Vikings’ field fence. Nate Lew, Avery Kaanta, and Chase Rhude crossed home ahead of Brett Lew.
Elk Mound added another run for a 9-4 lead and grew it to 16-4 with two in the sixth and five additional runs in the top of the seventh.
Colfax attempted to fight back in its final at bat in the bottom of the seventh inning and were able to put three more runs on the board before Elk Mound retired the side to end the Vikings rally and the game.
The Vikings final inning started with walks issued to Colin Bohl-Weidner and Austin Swanson. Zac Rindy came up to bat for the Vikings and doubled to center field which allowed both Bohl-Weidner and Swanson to score. Drew Gibson came up to bat one last time in the bottom of the seventh and popped up to right field, but the ball was high enough for Zac Rindy to round the bases for a run.
Colfax went through five pitchers in the seven innings giving up 15 hits and walking seven while striking out three. Jamison Field suffered the loss for the Vikings. Elk Mound’s Ryan Bohl and Brett Rosenthal shared the pitching duties and gave up 11 hits and five walks with Bohl getting the win.
Avery Kaanta lead the Mounders bats with a 3-for-5 performance. Ryan Bohl, Nate Lew and Cole Steinhorst each finished with two hits. Brett Lew, Ethan Kaanta and Chase Rhude each had a hit for extra bases with Brett Lew hitting the bases-loaded homer, Ethan Kaanta a triple and Rhude a double.
Grew Gibson had three hits for three at bats for Colfax including a double. Sawyer Best, Zac Rindy and George Scharlau finished with two hits a piece including a triple from Scharlau and a double by Rindy.
Elk Mound improved to 9-4 in conference and 9-5 overall with the win. Meanwhile, Colfax slipped to 4-11 in the D-SC and 4-14 in all games.
