ELK MOUND — The valedictorian of the Elk Mound High School Class of 2019 is Cameron Johnson.
Cameron is the son of Brian and Kristi Johnson of Elk Mound.
The Colfax Messenger sent out a questionnaire to Cameron, and here are his answers.
• Describe your most memorable event in high school: During the summer following sophomore year, I was able to go on a trip to Costa Rica with my Spanish class. I had never been out of the U.S. before, and I had never even seen the ocean before, so it was an experience unlike anything else that I had done, traveling throughout the wonderful country in a span of ten days.
• What were your favorite high school classes? My favorite classes were Algebra II (I had a very knowledgeable teacher, and there were many aspects of the class that I liked, such as the daily riddles or the catapult project); Economics (with the stock market game and entertaining discussions); and Spanish III (we had a small, somewhat laid-back class, but we did learn about many things, in addition to Spanish, including pirates, screensavers, phishing, etc.).
• In which activities were you involved during high school? Throughout high school, I was involved in Science Olympiad, Academic Decathlon, Future Business Leaders of America, National Honor Society, Baseball, Track and Field, Cross Country. Of these, my favorite would probably be Academic Decathlon; the actual studying part may have been monotonous sometimes, but the teams that I had been on never were, and we did not do too badly despite that.
• What does it mean to you to be valedictorian? To me, being valedictorian is an honorable achievement and is the result of no small amount of work done over the four years in school; it means that some effort given throughout many late nights was not entirely exhausted in vain.
• What are your plans for this summer? Right after graduation, while I would like to say I have some time to unwind after the school year, I still have to take a final for my Calc class, before finally being able to do so. Apart from that, I do plan on getting a job over the summer (maybe not right away), and possibly travel a little before college begins in September.
• Where do you plan to attend college or technical school? I am planning to attend UW-Eau Claire under a Physics/Engineering dual degree program; it is my intention to receive the engineering education at the University of Minnesota. I have always been interested in math and physics, so it is simply natural for me to be drawn to those fields of study.
