After a pair of close losses in a home doubleheader to Mondovi last Monday, May 6, the Colfax Vikings’ softball team snapped its seven-game losing streak with a big, ten-run win over Durand in Spring Valley the following evening, Tuesday, May 7.
For the second time in four days, the Vikings found themselves on the short end of a pair of tight games when they hosted Mondovi last Monday. Just like they had the previous Friday against Dunn-St. Croix co-leader Glenwood City, the Vikings softballers lost both ends of a doubleheader, falling 6-2 in game one and 5-4 in game two to the Lady Buffaloes.
In that doubleheader,Colfax brought things close in the bottom of the third inning when they got within one run, but Mondovi scored three runs in the fifth for the game one victory.
In the night cap, Colfax was able to get things tied up going in to the bottom of the fifth, but Mondovi’s Abbey Fedie scored on a throwing error from Taylor Irwin to give the Buffs the one-run win.
The following day, Tuesday May 7, Colfax had to travel to Spring Valley to take on the Durand Panthers in a game that was rescheduled from April 5. Taking on the Panthers following their game against the Cardinals, the Vikings were able to get a lead in the fourth inning off a big hit from Emmie Edwards that resulted in a grand slam home run which propelled Colfax to a 19-9 win – its first in eight games.
Unfortunately, their 4-10 overall and conference record doesn’t accurately show the talent the Vikings have on their squad this season.
Colfax traveled to Spring Valley this past Monday, May 13, and hosted Pepin/Alma last night, Tuesday, May 14 to wrap up conference and regular season play. The WIAA playoffs will begin this Thursday, May 16 but the Vikings have a first-play bye. They will travel to Spooner next Tuesday, May 21 for a Division 3 regional semifinal game against the Lady Rails with the winner advancing to the regional championship game on Thursday, May 23.
Mondovi – Game 1
The Colfax ladies hosted the Mondovi Buffaloes last Monday, May 6, and things didn’t go the way the Vikings had hoped in the squad’s second straight doubleheader as they lost both games to Mondovi including a 6-2 defeat in the first five-inning game.
Colfax gave up the early lead to the Buffaloes, who scored once in the first inning and twice more in t he second to lead 3-0.
The Vikings took back a run in the bottom of the second inning when Anna Geissler singled to left but was left stranded.
One inning later, Colfax scored again when Kaitlyn Field hit a sacrifice fly that allowed Taylor Irwin to tag up and score the Vikings’ second run and pull them to within one run of the Buffaloes.
But Mondovi, who outhit Colfax nine to two, scored three more runs in the top of the fifth to secure the 6-2 win.
Jozie Buchanan was in the pitching circle for Colfax and pitched all five innings, giving up nine hits and four earned runs in her 88 pitches.
Geissler and Irwin had the Vikings only two hits.

Mondovi – Game 2
Colfax was able to jump out to an early lead in the second game against the Buffaloes with two runs in the top of the first inning. But Mondovi plated four runs in the bottom of second inning to take a 4-2 lead.
Then in the top of the fifth frame, the Vikings score a pair of runs to knot the game at four all.
But the tie did not last for long. Colfax suffered a throwing error in the bottom of the inning which allowed Mondovi’s Abbey Fedie to score the game-winning run for the 5-4 final.
It took only two batters into the first inning for Colfax to put up a run. Taylor Irwin reached base on an error by Mondovi pitcher Rian Evans, which gave Bailey Bradford the opportunity to score.
Irwin reached third base on the same error and with Jozie Buchanan up, she hit a ground ball and it was just enough for Irwin to score the second run of the evening.
After the bottom of the second inning when Mondovi scored four runs, it was a quiet third and fourth inning for both teams.
But in the fifth inning, Colfax gathered themselves in order to put up two more runs on the board from Tori Hill and Anna Geissler only to see Mondovi win it in the bottom half on a Viking throwing error.
Buchanan also pitched the second game, giving up three hits, two walks and five runs (4 earned) in 45 pitches to take the loss.
Geissler, Irwin, Hill, Buchanan and Bradford all had a hit each to account for the Vikings five hits. Geissler’s lone hit went for a double.

Things looked a bit bleak for the Colfax ladies as they gave up the early lead to the Durand Panthers on Tuesday, May 7, in a game played at Spring Valley which had been rescheduled from April 5.
Durand scored three runs in the top of the first. Colfax answered with a pair in the bottom half but the Panthers added a run in the third and four more in the fourth.
“We battled during a tough stretch, getting down 8-2 in the first four innings,” said head coach John Dickinsen. “However, we stayed positive and kept an aggressive approach at the plate.”
But a huge fourth inning, which included a grand slam by Emmie Edwards, was the confidence booster the Vikings needed to take the win, 19-9. In all, Colfax scored a dozen runs in the fourth and added a run in the fifth and four more in the sixth.
Rachel Scharlau and Marissa Harmon sat on first and second in the fourth inning as Bailey Bradford came to the plate and sent the ball flying to left field on the first pitch which scored Harmon and advanced Scharlau to third.
Then, with the bases loaded in the fourth inning, Emmie Edwards came up to bat for the Vikings and went 1-2 in the count before connecting and hitting the ball outside the park for a grand slam, the first for Colfax this season.
Edwards helped to seal the deal for the Vikings with five RBIs in her two hits in four plate appearances.
“Finally some hits started dropping and we ended up scoring twelve runs in the fourth inning which was highlighted by a grand slam,” Dickinsen said.
Colfax finished with a whopping 19 hits led by Bailey Bradford’s 4-for-6 performance in the batter’s box which included three doubles and three RBIs. Taylor Irwin connected for three singles in her five at bats and Tori Hill, Anna Geissler, Marissa Harmon and Jozie Buchanan joined Edwards with a pair of hits each.
Jozie Buchanan went the distance on the mound for Colfax scattered nine hits and gave up nine runs, four of which were earned including a home run, and had two strikeouts in six innings of work to earn the win.
