It was a tough week for the Boyceville track and field squads as they finished outside the top five teams at Mondovi last Monday, May 6, and again at home for the Larry Z Battle of the Small Schools Invitational held Thursday, May 9.
Even with the experience that came with competing in Mondovi, Boyceville came up short handed as the girls and boys finished in sixth and seventh place even with some top ten finishes which included a first-place finish in the pole vault by Megan Hintzman.
Boyceville hosted its annual Larry Z Invitational, named in honor of the late Larry Zirgibel who taught and coached in Boyceville, last Thursday. It was a better outing for the Bulldogs as the girls had two first-place finishes in the hurdles and long jump events. Point-wise, they didn’t show the improvement the Bulldogs have made in recent weeks as they finished in sixth for the boys and seventh in the girls’ competition.
The Bulldogs traveled to Durand yesterday, May 14, for the D-SC conference tournament. The teams will return to the track next Monday, May 20, in Colfax for the WIAA Division 3 regional meet. The top four finishers in each regional event will earn a berth in the sectional meet which will be held on Thursday, May 23 at Cameron High School.
Mondovi
The Bulldogs track and field team traveled to Mondovi on Monday, May 6, and competed in the Mondovi Invitational and took seventh place for the boys and sixth place for the girls.
Elk Mound and Mondovi finished in first and second for the boys while Bloomer and Mondovi placed first and second in the girls’ team competition.
“It was a good experience for them as we get into the competition part of our season,” said head coach Corey Day.
Megan Hintzman finished in first in the pole vault event with a jump of 8′ 06”.
Teammate Naomi Hillman finished in sixth place in the 100 meter dash with a time of :14.14 and in ninth place in the long jump with a distance of 14’07”.
The Bulldog boys ran their fastest 4×800 meter relay of the season finishing in fourth with a time of 9:36.81. The team consisted Nathan Corr, Cade Klefstad, Steven Rasmussen and Brian Johnson.
Corr also took part in the 1,600 meter run and finished in sixth place with a time of 5:12.12.
“It was good to see improvements still happening after four track meets in seven days,” Day explained. “This hard competition phase will help going forward to the tournament series.”
