ELK MOUND — When rivals Colfax and Elk Mound met last Monday on the baseball diamond for the first time this season it proved to be a lopsided affair.
Things went the way of the Mounders in the April 29 Dunn-St. Croix contest as they claimed a 8-1 home win over the Vikings.
With that win, Elk Mound evened it conference mark at 3-3 while Colfax remained in last place at 0-6.
“We played pretty good,” said Vikings’ head coach Kirk Secraw. “We are getting better.”
The first two and a half innings went rather quickly as both the Mounders and Vikings failed to score, but Elk Mound was able to plate a run in the bottom of the third inning to take an early lead.
Blaze Todd threw all seven innings for Elk Mound to get the win and gave up only four hits and one walk to Colfax. Todd also struck out five Vikings’ batters and also went one-of-four at the plate and had three RBIs and was left on base four times.
Ethan Kaanta and Chase Rhude each had a pair of hits for the Mounders who finished with ten compared to just four hits by the Vikings. Rhude had double and a RBI.
Brothers Brett and Nate Lew had a successful evening as they both had a hit and scored two runs. Brett also had three RBIs and one walk and Nate had one hit and two walks.
Elk Mound added three more runs in the fifth and doubled its tally to eight with four in the sixth inning to lead 8-0.
Sawyer Best had one of the Vikings’ four hits and was the only Colfax batter to score a run which came in the seventh inning, but it wouldn’t be enough to get the Colfax close to Elk Mound.
“Sawyer continues to hit the ball well,” Secraw explained. “Chris Scharlau had some great catches in the outfield, he was getting great jumps.”
Chris Scharlau was one-for-two at the plate for Colfax and had one walk, but was stranded on base also.
Caden Erickson and Jamison Flatland had the Vikings’ other two singles.
Drew Gibson threw five and a third innings for Colfax and suffered the loss.
Colfax finally ended its winless skid by splitting a pair of doubleheaders at home against Elmwood/Plum City last Thursday and at Glenwood City on Friday.
The Vikings played their third straight doubleheader on Monday when they hosted the Mondovi Buffaloes. The Pepin/Alma Eagles will be in Colfax on Thursday, May 9 as will the Eau Claire Immanuel Lancers for a non-conference contest this coming Saturday, May 11. Next Monday, May 13, Colfax will travel to take on the Spring Valley Cardinals.
The Mounders went on to make a clean sweep of last week’s schedule as they beat Durand 4-1 last Thursday and then blanked conference co-leader Boyceville 3-0 on Friday.
Elk Mound welcomed Elmwood/Plum City this past Monday evening, May 6, and will travel to Glenwood City for a doubleheader on Thursday, May 9. The following evening, May 10, the Mounders are back at home against Mondovi and will travel next Monday and Tuesday, May 13 and 14 for games against Pepin/Alma in Pepin and at Boyceville.
