It was a difficult week for Colfax on the softball field.
Despite heading into last week’s action with momentum and confidence from an 11-6 road win over Durand on April 26, the Lady Vikings suffered five straight defeats at the hands of the Dunn-St. Croix conference’s top three squads including close double defeats to front-runner and rival Elk Mound and second-place Glenwood City.
Those outcomes left Colfax mired in a sixth-place tie with Mondovi at 3-8 in the D-SC standings. That is also the Vikings’ overall record.
Colfax started last week with 3-1 and 4-0 losses to Elk Mound in a Monday, April 29 doubleheader in Elk Mound (see separate story).
Then Elmwood/Plum City got off to an early lead thanks to a pair of runs in the first and second inning of Tuesday’s, April 30 game. The Wolves made the early 4-0 lead stand up as they left Colfax with several runners on base in what ended up a 6-2 win in favor of the Wolves.
Colfax traveled to Glenwood City on Friday evening, May 3, to take part in its second doubleheader of the week and were unable to get past the pitching of Maggie Wallin and the defense of the Hilltoppers. Colfax came back in the second game to tie it up in the top of the fifth inning, but Wallin would be the deciding factor as she scored a run to end the game 6-5 in Glenwood City’s favor.
The Vikings were back on the diamond this past Monday, May 6, in yet another doubleheader as they hosted the Mondovi Buffaloes and took on Durand last evening, Tuesday, in a game played in Spring Valley. Colfax will end the regular and conference seasons with a home game against Pepin/Alma this Thursday, May 9 and away in Spring Valley next Monday, May 13.
The WIAA playoffs begin on Thursday, May 16.
It was a struggle all evening for the Colfax ladies as they welcomed Elmwood/Plum City to the diamond and fell short with a score of 2-6 in the Tuesday evening, April 30, game.
“We had very few quality at bats,” said head coach John Dickinsen. “We struggled to get good contact with the ball.”
The Vikings would score in the final inning of the game by way of runs from Anna Geissler and Taylor Irwin. Geissler was walked in the seventh inning and Irwin reached first base on an error.
Jozie Buchanan was on the mound for all seven innings against the Wolves with two strikeouts and gave up only three earned runs, Buchanan went three-for-three against EPC pitcher Anna Blanford but she was unable to score.
“They (EPC) found a lot of holes to punch the ball,” Dickinsen said. “We really kept the game closer than it could’ve been with their 15 hits to our five.”
