ALMA — A five-run third inning gave the Vikings’ baseball team a four-run lead when it traveled to Alma last Tuesday, April 16 to play the Pepin/Alma Eagles in a Dunn-St. Croix game.
Colfax’s lead, unfortunately, was short lived.
Pepin/Alma plated five runs of its own in the bottom half of that inning to take a 6-5 advantage and then added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth frame to secure a 7-5 win over Colfax, who was unable to score again following that third-inning splurge.
The loss dropped the Vikings to 0-2 in conference contests and 0-4 overall.
“It was a decent game,” said Vikings head coach Kirk Secraw. “We struggled to throw strikes again.”
Drew Gibson started on the mound for Colfax and pitched two and one-third innings and gave up six runs of which three were earned and surrendered six walks with no strike outs to take the loss.
George Scharlau threw two and two-thirds innings of scoreless ball, giving up just a single hit and three walks in his time on the pitching mound. Jamison Flatland pitched an inning and gave up a pair of hits and the Eagles final run.
With the host Eagles leading 1-0, the Vikings’ fifth inning proved to be the golden inning as they plated all five of their runs for their only lead of the game.
“We had some forced errors and we need to work on our mental baseball,” Secraw explained, whose crew committed three errors in the seven-inning game.
Offensively, Colfax finished with six hits coming from different individuals. Pepin/Alma finished with seven hits.
The Vikings’ Jamison Flatland doubled for his only hit in three at bats and had an RBI. Bryce Sikora, Caden Erickson, Zac Rindy, Mitch Harmon and Scharlau each had singles and scored a run. Harmon and Scharlau finished with two RBIs each.
Zac Rindy, George Scharlau and Caden Erickson also had stolen bases for the Vikings.
The Vikings were off six days due to the Easter Holiday but will have a busy upcoming week. Colfax welcomed Spring Valley last evening, Tuesday, April 23 and will host the Boyceville Bulldogs on Thursday, April 25, followed by a road trip to Durand the following day, April 26. They then play the rival Mounders in Elk Mound next Monday, April 29.
Keep in mind, games are subject to change of location or postponement due to weather and/or field conditions.
