BLOOMER — A night of tough pitching and mental collapses proved to be a downfall for the Colfax baseball team as they suffered a devastating 21-0 five-inning, road shut out loss to the Bloomer Blackhawks last Tuesday, April 9.
“Not a good game all around,” said Vikings’ head coach Secraw. “If we don’t throw strikes, we are not going to win.”
George Scharlau and Zach Rindy worked the mound the longest for Colfax with Scharlau seeing one and a third innings of work and Rindy pitching for two and a third innings. Scharlau had two strike outs and a lone walk but gave up two runs to the Blackhawks, while Rindy had one strikeout, one walk and a single run credited to him.
Colfax also threw Austin Synder, Caden Erickson and Nick Jenson, who surrendered a combined 18 runs (14 of which were earned) on just five hits in only a third of an inning of pitching.
Bloomer finished with nine hits to Colfax’s four but the Vikings also committed three errors.
It was a tough second inning for the Vikings as they gave up 17 runs spread out between nine of the batters that came to the plate. The pitching staff for Colfax gave up 12 walks in the five inning game.
Erickson attempted to make up for his pitching woes as he was the only Colfax batter to have two hits against Bloomer. George Scharlau and Sawyer Best each had one hit a piece.
With the loss to Bloomer, the Vikings now sit 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the Dunn-St. Croix.
Coach Secraw explained that Colfax will need to work on not breaking down mentally on the mound in order to start winning some games.
Games against Elmwood/Plum City and Glenwood City were postponed last week with no make-up date set as of the time of Monday’s publication.
The Vikings traveled to Mondovi this past Monday, April 15, and played Pepin/Alma at home yesterday. Colfax will head to Cadott tomorrow, Thursday, April 18, followed by a game next Tuesday, April 23 at home against Spring Valley.
With snowy weather still playing a factor, one if not all games maybe postponed or canceled.
