ELMWOOD — For the first time since the 2019 season officially got underway, the Colfax softball team was finally able to take to the field last Tuesday, April 9, when they traveled to Elmwood for a Dunn-St. Croix battle against the Elmwood/Plum City Wolves.
The Vikings jumped to an early 5-1 lead with four runs in the top of the second inning only to watch the Wolves rally for a 7-5 win.
Elmwood/Plum City knotted the score at five with a pair of runs in the bottom halves of the third and fourth frames, and then took the lead for good with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
“We played ok and it was good to get a first game in for our younger players,” said Colfax head softball coach John Dickinsen. “However, we had too many errors and unearned runs that we gave up.”
Colfax finished the seventh-inning contest with six fielding errors.
Junior Jozie Buchanan relieved starter pitcher Anna Geissler in the second inning for Colfax and pitched a great game for the Vikings with three strike outs and two walks and gave up only one earned run in five innings of work.
Bailey Bradford started her season out on a high note with a first-pitch single and then followed it up in the second inning with an RBI double. Bradford finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Emmie Edwards also had a pair of hits in three plate appearances and scored a run. Jozie Buchanan went 1-for-3 with a double and a RBI.
Jenna Goodell, who was also 1-for-3, hit a clutch two-RBI single in the second to help spark the Vikings four-run, second inning. Goodell along with Anna Geissler, who drew a walk, each scored a run for Colfax in that second frame.
“We had opportunities with people on base,” said Dickinsen. “Once with the bases loaded and once with runners at second and third without getting any runs.”
“I’m excited about the potential we have and the direction we’re headed with a young team,” Dickinsen explained.
The remaining game of the week for Colfax against Glenwood City was postponed due to the snow storm. No rescheduled date had been set at the time of publication.
Depending on weather and ground conditions, the Vikings were slated to play in Mondovi on Monday, April 15, and followed it up with a home game against Pepin/Alma last evening, Tuesday, April 16. Colfax will make their way to Cadott this Thursday, April 18 for an out-of-league game and then will welcome Spring Valley next Tuesday, April 23.
All games are subject to change due to weather and field conditions.
