MENOMONIE — The Colfax track and field teams traveled to Menomonie last Saturday, March 23, to take part in the Northern Badger Classic hosted at UW-Stout and both teams managed 14th-place finishes.
“I was much happier with how we competed Saturday,” said Vikings’ head coach Ryan Krall. “Top to bottom I felt like we came in with a great attitude and were committed to competing here – that was great to see.”
Junior Kameri Meredith finished strong for the Vikings in the 55M Hurdles as she placed seventh during the preliminaries with a time of :9.57 and went on to finish in third place in the finals with a time of :9.23. Meredith also competed in the 200M dash and finished in 15th place.
Meredith found her rhythm again in the 55M hurdles, according to Krall, after she was disappointed with her performance the week before at UW-Eau Claire.
“Kameri really is one of the best hurdlers in our area – she outworks everyone and is a perfectionist in the event,” Krall stated. “She is determined to return to LaCrosse this year for state, and performances like Saturday’s make it look awfully possible.”
Samantha Pretasky was consistent for Colfax finishing in 18th place in the 200M dash with a time of :29.37 and was in 15th place in the Girls’ long jump with a distance of 13’8”.
Distance runners Hailey Prince and Juelia Berger didn’t get off to the best of starts as they finished in 29th and 31st place respectively in the 800M followed by 30th and 34th place in the 1600M with times of 6:57.21 and 7:16.08.
Stepping up for the Vikings in the 3200M was freshman Jasmine Best who finished in fifth place with a time of 14:03.98.
The Colfax boys’ team kicked off their meet with a first place finish from Jeremy Artist in the preliminaries for the 55M dash. Artist went on to finish in second place in the 55M final with a time of :6.85 which was :0.01 of a second behind first place finisher Joseph Aguilera from Abbotsford, who finished with a :6.84. Artist also competed in the 200M dash and finished in 12th place with a time of :25.12.
“Jeremy has grown so much in his career with us,” said Krall. “He ran the two fastest 55M of his life Saturday, just narrowly missing out on winning the event in the finals. He is a kid that just loves to race.”
Krall also explained that Artist’s leadership in picking up a leg of the 4x400M relay at the end of the Northern Badger meet was on full display as well.
Luke Heidorn was rather successful in the long jump event for Colfax as he finished in seventh place with a distance of 17’9”, Max Knudson also competed in the long jump and finished in 34th place with a distance of 14’.75”.
“We are hoping like crazy that the weather will cooperate with us and we will be outdoors for our next meet,” coach Krall said. “Our kids are excited to compete outdoors on the track and get back into the flow of a normal track meet. I’m optimistic that we will continue to progress nicely as the season moves on.”
Colfax will take the next few days to practice before traveling to Hammond for a meet at St. Croix Central on Thursday, April 4.
