BOYCEVILLE — With just a handful of seniors and juniors, the Boyceville boys’ and girls’ track and field teams will be turning to their younger and less experience athletes to help out in the 2019 season.
Although the Bulldogs saw just four seniors walk across the stage in last year’s graduation ceremony, that quartet’s loss will be felt this season. Paulina Weinke (second team all-conference), Haley Wold (second team all-conference), Satina Chilson and Brandon Kenefick (first team all-conference) are gone and with them went a lot of experience and points.
Boyceville’s head coach Corey Day hopes to see some of this year’s younger members step up and fill those openings in the discus throw, shot put and pole vault.
“We were very strong in the throwing events last year,” said Day, in his twelfth year as Boyceville’s head coach. “We had three senior girls that dedicated a lot of time.”
The Bulldogs welcome back junior Megan Hintzman, who was last season’s conference champion in the pole vault and finished just one place away from going to state.
Jasmine Windsor and Jocelyn Wilson also return to the girls team for the 2019 season.
Windsor had a strong finish in the shot put at regionals while Wilson had some success in the 100 meter dash during her freshman year and raced up to the 800 meter run.
“I have a clear direction for her this year,” stated Day of Wilson.
There will be some fresh faces on the Bulldogs teams as the boys welcome freshmen Preston Coombs, who, according to Day, had some success in middle school.
Caden Standaert and Brian Johnson had success for Boyceville at the end of the cross country season and look to be strong for the boys’ team this spring.
Numbers will be a factor especially against the top Dunn-St. Croix competitors like three-time boys’ defending champion Elk Mound along with Mondovi and Durand. That trio, both on the boys and girls side, will be tough to compete against in Day’s opinion.
For Day and his Bulldogs teams, there is one main focus for the entirety of the 2019 season.
“It’s simple, to improve start to finish,” said coach Corey Day. “With a young team I expect to see a lot of improvement.”
