CAMERON — The playoffs offer a fresh start and new beginning for every team.
Unfortunately for the Boyceville boys’ basketball team, that fresh start ended the same way its previous 17 games of the regular season had – with a loss.
A tough Cameron (17-5) squad, who finished fourth in the strong Lakeland Central Conference, enjoyed a highly-productive and successful night of offense as it more than doubled up on hapless Boyceville to win 87-42 in the pair’s WIAA Division 4 regional opening (quarterfinal) contest played last Tuesday, February 26 on the Comets’ home court.
The loss, their 18th straight, brought the Bulldogs’ season to an end with a 2-18 mark.
“Cameron was really tough to stop in transition,” said Bulldogs’ head coach Austin Donahue. “They run their fly lanes really well and they have a few players that can really see the floor.”
Putting up close to half of Boyceville’s total team points was senior Jaden Reisimer with a team-high 20 points. All but two of Reisimer’s points came in the second half where the Bulldogs scored 31 points after opening with just 11 in the first half.
Cameron didn’t have a problem scoring in either half, netting 45 in the first 18 minutes of play for a 34-point halftime cushion and chipping in for another 42 points in the second half.
The Comets, who made 11 of its 22, three-points shots, had 11 players score in the game including four in double digits. Derek Gifford led Cameron with 20 points.
Brendan Sempf and Brady Nye attempted to help out and finished with six and five points respectively.
“We struggled to rebound and they had a bunch of second chance looks,” Donahue explained. “On our offensive end we struggled to execute in our sets and forced some shots.”
Senior Seth Wruck got some playoff time and made his way to the net for four points. Cade Klefstad and Bailey Danovsky each finished with a basket.
“These guys worked hard this season when nobody was watching,” stated Donahue. “They were dedicated and remained positive throughout the hard times. The amount they improved was really inspiring.”
It was the final time in a Bulldogs basketball uniform for seniors Jaden Reisimer, Bailey Donovsky, Brady Nye, William Link and Seth Wruck.
