Glenwood City High/Middle School is proud to announce the December Students of the Month. The character trait that served as the focus for the month was compassion; students who are able to understand the plight of their peers and actively seek ways to minimize struggles. Compassionate students are those who demonstrate grace and kindness – taking an active role in helping others. Each of the students that were nominated throughout the month exhibited the characteristics of compassion in a way that helps to solidify a positive school culture that can be found throughout our building.
The December Student of the Month at Glenwood City High School is senior, Chyann Harrell. Chyann was nominated by Ms. Finley, English/Language Arts instructor. Ms. Finley recognized Chyann’s helping personality and nominated her stating, “Chyann is always helping others in class. If anyone ever has a question or are confused about something, she does not hesitate to offer answers. On multiple occasions, I have watched her patiently help a peer with directions and work. She always has a positive attitude. Chyann is a kind and thoughtful person and deserving of the student of the month.” Chyann is the daughter of Kelly Fisher-Harrell.
The December Student of the Month at Glenwood City Middle School is eighth grader, Brooklyn Caress. Brooklyn’s compassion was recognized by Mr. Strong who shared, “I would like to nominate Brooklyn Caress because she demonstrates the definition of compassion each day. Brooklyn has always been positive and willing to help other students in my physical education classes. She volunteers to partner up with students who struggle with a specific skill in activities such as Badminton. Brooklyn also encourages other students when they are struggling with the required exercises before we start each day. She participates in the exercises with a smile on her face, which encourages others to follow her lead. She is polite, kind, caring and compassionate to all students and staff. We could all take a lesson from Brooklyn that being kind and caring to others is what life is all about.” Brooklyn is the daughter of Brandi and David Caress.
Students of the Month are acknowledged by having lunch provided for them and a friend, as well as being issued a unique piece of Hilltopper apparel. In addition, students are provided with preferential parking (for them or a family member).
We also had a record number of students nominated this past month. Eleven nominations were submitted on behalf of our students and their ability to be compassionate – Michaela Blaser by Mr. Score; Izzy Draxler by Mr. Lamb; Genevieve Gretzlock by Ms. Minor; Jared Hager by Ms. Holter; Nicholas Hierlmeier by Mr. Lamb; Kiley Leduc by Ms. Anderson; Ryeah Oehlke by Ms. Scherer; Connor Olson by Dr. Ketola and Nelson Polen by Mr. VanderWaal.
