Former Colfax man arrested in connection with Menomonie homicide

MENOMONIE — A former Colfax man, Richard W. Seehaver, has been arrested in connection with the death in Menomonie of another former Colfax man, John M. Likeness, on Sunday, December 30.
According to a news release, at around 3:15 p.m. December 30, the Menomonie Police Department responded to a 911 call about a disturbance at 603 15th Street Southeast.
When police officers arrived, the body of man was discovered on the premises. Menomonie Fire and Rescue responded to the scene to provide life-saving measures, and it was the determined that the man, later identified as John Likeness, was deceased.
Another man at the scene, Richard Seehaver, was detained pending police follow up with a death investigation.
Based on crime scene investigation, and witness and suspect statements, Seehaver was arrested and referred to the Dunn County District Attorney’s office on charges of first degree intentional homicide with a domestic abuse enhancer and an increased penalty for habitual criminality, according to the news release.
The Menomonie Police Department was assisted by the Dunn County Sheriff’s Department, UW-Stout Police, the Wisconsin State Patrol, the Wisconsin Crime Lab, the Dunn County Medical Examiner’s Office, the Dunn County District Attorney’s Office and the Ramsey County Medical Examiner.
According to a spokesperson from the Dunn County jail, a cash bail of $200,000 was set for Seehaver by Judge Rod Smeltzer.
According to a spokesperson from Dunn County District Attorney Andrea Nodolf’s office, Seehaver was scheduled for an initial hearing in Dunn County Circuit Court January 8.
According to online court records, Seehaver was found guilty in Dunn County of one felony count of battery to law enforcement officers in 2002 and sentenced to five years of probation with one year in the county jail.
In 2009, Seehaver was found guilty in Dunn County of one misdemeanor count of bail jumping and was sentenced to six months in the county jail.
In 2009, Seehaver also was found guilty of misdemeanor criminal damage to property in Dunn County and was placed on one year of probation and sentenced to 80 hours of community service.
In 2010, Seehaver pleaded guilty in Dunn County to one felony count of substantial battery intending bodily harm. He was sentenced to 18 months in state prison and to two years of extended supervision, to run consecutively to the sentence in another felony case of battery in which he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to another two and a half years in state prison and three years of extended supervision.
In 2016 in Sawyer County, Seehaver was found guilty on one felony count of possession of an electric weapon and was sentenced to two years of probation.
Also in 2016 in Dunn County, Seehaver was found guilty on one misdemeanor count of Operating While Intoxicated third offense and was sentenced to 54 days in the county jail.
In 2017, Seehaver was found guilty in Dunn County on one misdemeanor count of possessing marijuana and was sentenced to 30 days in jail and one year of probation.
Earlier this year, Seehaver was found guilty in Dunn County on one misdemeanor count of possessing marijuana and was ordered to pay $243 in court costs and a $200 DNA surcharge.
