By Mayor John Larson
GLENWOOD CITY — At a special meeting held on December 20, 2018, the Glenwood City Common Council approved a motion to purchase the “Old School” property from the current owners, Northern Light Investment Group, LLC of St. Paul, Minnesota.
The old school property, located at 509 – 3rd Street in Glenwood City, encompasses 2.9 acres. It has gone thru several changes of ownership since it was abandoned by the school district in the 1980’s. The property has sat vacant for several years with vandalism occurring frequently.
The purchase price was set at $15,000 with the City also agreeing to settle delinquent real estate taxes and special assessments totaling $24,275.
The building itself has become structurally obsolete. Remodeling costs will exceed new construction costs. Preliminary plans (subject to change) include demolishing the structure and possibly developing 6-8 building sites where new homes can be constructed.
The City intends to apply for a “Brownfield Grant” thru the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to help pay costs for asbestos abatement (floor tiles and pipe wrap insulation).
Mayor Larson stated “The City doesn’t really want to be in the real estate business but something had to be done.” City Council Members agreed that the “Old School” has been an eyesore in the community for 30+ years. During this time, through several different owners, nothing has happened and only continued deterioration of the building has occurred. It was past time for somebody to do something.
