GLENWOOD CITY — The Lady Vikes were on the road last Thursday, December 13, in the land of the Hilltoppers and following a slow start Colfax warmed up and earned a 58-28 win.
“It took us a little while to get going but we were good in the first half,” said head coach Joe Doucette of the 30-point victory. “We played a ton of kids second half and had ten people score.”
The win helped the Colfax keep pace with Durand as both teams are currently 4-0 in D-SC action. The Vikings are 6-1 overall.
Colfax’s Kameri Meredith broke the scoreless deadlock with the first basket at 15:51 and on the next possession nailed a triple to give the Vikings a 5-0 lead. Meredith put up two more doubles with one in the first and the other in the second half against the Toppers.
Glenwood City’s Alexys Curvello hit a jumper from inside the free throw line to put the Toppers on the scoreboard, but a triple from Alyssa Dachel would begin a 13-0 run for the Vikings.
“Alyssa Dachel had a good night shooting the ball, when she shoots the ball well we usually play very well,” Doucette explained.
Dachel netted three triples throughout the contest as well as a double and was two-of-two from the foul line.
Mikiah Schutz scored the Toppers second field goal of the game at 7:48 to end the Vikings run and along with teammates Delanie Fayerweather and Alexys Curvello added on seven more points. But Colfax rallied back to tack on a pair of two-point scores by Rachel Scharlau, Jayna Bowe off of a steal along with teammates to bring the Vikings to 33-9 at halftime.
Scharlau and Bowe put up 11 points between the pair off of four doubles and a trey.
“Morgan Schleusner and Addy Olson did a great job defensively on their (Glenwood City) leading scorer,” Doucette stated. “I thought we got the ball inside very well and Emma and Rachel were solid in all areas.”
Emma Hurlburt added to the Vikings score with four doubles suffering only two fouls in the second half against the Lady Toppers.
“We seem to play in spurts and our intensity comes and goes, if we can find some consistency I think our level of play will really take off,” Doucette commented. “We really scheduled a tough non-conference slate to really test us and help us grow.”
Contributing to Colfax’s score were teammates Morgan Schleusner with three, Savannah Henricks tacked on four, Madison Barstad netted a triple, Abbie Irwin added in four and Addy Olson bucketed three more.
The Lady Vikes were back at home Monday, December 17, against Melrose-Mindoro, who knocked them off in the WIAA Division 4 sectional finals last March. Colfax will travel to St. Croix Central on Thursday, December 20 before beginning the Christmas break.
