OSCEOLA — Despite still sporting a pair of open weight classes, the Boyceville wrestling squad managed to parlay its collective efforts into a 3-2 finish at the 2018 Chieftain Duals held last Saturday, December 15 at Osceola High School.
The tournament featured eight teams split into a pair of 4-school pools.
The Bulldogs finished 2-1 in their pool beating Barron 56-24 and Luck/Frederic/Grantsburg/Siren 42-29 before falling to host and eventual tournament champion Osceola 36-28. In a pair of crossover matches with teams from the other pool, Boyceville posted a 42-33 win over River Falls and lost 38-27 to Cumberland in the day’s final dual.
Boyceville finished in a tie for second place overall, as they beat River Falls – who had upended Cumberland who knocked off the Bulldogs.
A trio of individuals finished the five-dual tournament with unblemished records. Senior Brock Schlough and sophomores Trett Joles and Nate Stuart all posted 5-0 marks.
Schlough, a three-time state champion and currently top ranked D3 wrestler at 152, registered four pins, including one in 7 seconds and another in 15 ticks, and a technical fall in matches at 152 and 160 pounds.
Joles, ranked second at 182 pounds, had to work a bit harder to keep his record perfect winning hard fought decisions at 182 and 195 pounds (a 7-6 win over Nick Carlson of Osceola) before closing out the tournament with a technical fall and two pins.
Stuart counted a pair of pins, a major and regular decision and a forfeit among his five wins at 126 pounds.
Senior Nick Goodell and freshman Ira Bialzik both finished 4-1. Goodell had a pair of pins among his wins at 145 pounds while Bialzik scored three falls and a forfeit at 132.
Josiah Berg won three of his five matches at 113 pounds – all by fall.
The Bulldogs opened the tournament with a 56-24 win over Heart O’ North member Barron and then took a 42-29 win over the Lakeland Conference cooperative of Luck/Frederic/Grantsburg/Siren.
Boyceville came up short in its bid to upend Osceola, losing the final dual of pool play 36-28 despite pins by Nick Goodell, Brock Schlough and Nate Stuart. The Chieftains picked up three pins of their own along with a forfeit, a technical fall and a major decision to take an 8-point win.
In the first of their two crossover duals, Boyceville tamed the Wildcats of River Falls 42-33. Brice Evenson (106), Josiah Berg (113), Eli Swanson (120) and Ira Bialzik (132) opened the dual with pins and Nate Stuart added a decision at 126 to stake the Bulldogs to an early 27-0 lead. Boyceville also secured falls from Brock Schlough and Trett Joles.
In the second crossover and final dual of the tournament, Cumberland battled back from an early deficit to beat the Bulldogs by a score of 38-27. The dual featured six pins with each squad winning three. The Beavers also picked up a couple of one-point decisions at 106 and 120 pounds and two major decision to win by 11 points.
Boyceville concluded its pre-holiday schedule this week with a pair of home duals. The Bulldogs hosted Chetek-Weyerhaeuser/Prairie Farm in last evening’s “Battle of the Bulldogs” and will welcome Clear Lake to the gymnatorium this Thursday, December 20. Then following the Christmas break, Boyceville heads to River Falls High School for the 2018 Northern Badger Wrestling Classic on Friday, December 28 and Saturday, December 29.
