WISCONSIN DELLS — Boyceville’s rather young, inexperience and incomplete wrestling squad showed some growth and improvement in its second week of the season.
Unaccustomed to the 16th seed it was given heading in this past Saturday’s prestigious Dells Duals in Wisconsin Dells, the youthful Bulldogs made the most of the experience and finished in 14th place at the dual-style tournament held at the Chula Vista Resort.
Boyceville finished 2-3 in the December 8th, 16-team tournament that featured several large and state-ranked schools including Division 1’s top ranked team, the Stoughton Vikings. The Bulldogs could have easily went 4-1 dropping two matches by a combined total of four points.
“We had a great trip to the Dells,” stated Boyceville head wrestling coach Jamie Olson. “Always a fun weekend of wrestling, team bonding and new experiences.”
State place winners Brock Schlough and Trett Joles finished the December 8 tournament unbeaten with 5-0 marks.
Schlough, wrestling at 152 pounds, recorded four pins including one in 37 seconds and another in only 18 ticks.
But the honor of the quickest Bulldogs’ pin of the day went sophomore Trett Joles who registered a nine second pin and finished the day with two pins and major decisions and a forfeit while splitting mat time at 182 and 195 pounds.
Boyceville also received standout performances from Josiah Berg (113), Eli Swanson (120) and Nate Stuart (126 and 132) who all finished 4-1. Nick Goodell (145) and Taylor Schmid (160) each finished 3-2.
In the tournament opening round, the Bulldogs’ drew a New Lisbon team that has former Wisconsin Badger coach Barry Davis helping with the program. Boyceville overwhelmed New Lisbon with four pins and five forfeits to win 54-30.
“The New Lisbon dual featured Barry Davis in the corner for them, so it was cool to beat the ex-badger coach,” admitted Olson.
Boyceville then drew the unenviable task of facing powerhouse Stoughton to start the championship round. The Vikings posted a 69-7 win with only the Bulldogs state place winners taking victories.
“The draw wasn’t the best, but the experience of wrestling Stoughton in the second round was awesome,” stated Olson. “Joles and Schlough wrestled tough to get us two wins, overall we wrestled hard and learned some valuable lessons.”
Over the next three duals, Boyceville suffered a pair of agonizingly close decisions, dropping a 39-36 contest to Kewaskum in the opening round of the consolation bracket and a 39-38 defeat at the hands of Portage in the 13th-place match. In between, the Bulldogs bested Edgar 43 to 36.
“We lost two very close duals to Kewaskum and Portage, and edged a very good Edgar team,” Olson said. “It made for an exciting weekend, 3 of the 5 duals came down to the end and those type of matches will pay dividends down the line.”
“Our young line-up continues to improve and gain confidence,” added Olson. “Hopefully we will get a couple guys back this coming weekend for the Osceola duals that sat out with injuries this past weekend. Fielding a full line-up is important if we’re going to compete at a higher level moving forward.”
Boyceville will be at the Osceola Duals this Saturday, December 15 and will return home next week to host Chetek-Weyerhaeuser-Prairie Farm and Clear Lake in a pair of non-conference duals.
