SPRING VALLEY — The Colfax boys’ basketball team put its unbeaten season on the line last Thursday evening, December 6, when it visited a pesky Cardinals squad in Spring Valley.
The Vikings lack of patience especially on the offensive end of the court allowed the Cardinals to fly away with the 53-46 upset win in the Dunn-St. Croix opener for both squads.
“We didn’t shoot the ball very well and Spring Valley did a good job of taking away the inside on us,” stated head coach Garrett Maas of Colfax’s first loss this season. “We settled for too many quick shots on our end.”
Despite the seven steals Colfax (0-1, 3-1) had against the Cardinals it wasn’t enough to get the game going in the Vikings’ direction.
George Scharlau led the way on the court with 20 total points off of six doubles, a pair of threes and was two-of-two from the foul line.
The Cardinals junior forward, Trevor Stangl, was the thorn in the Vikings’ side all evening as he finished with six triples and two-of-five from the foul line for 20 points, and had four steals along with six defensive rebounds.
“They (Spring Valley) also were very patient on the offense and limited the number of possessions,” said coach Maas.
Senior Ben Thompson tallied 11 points for the Vikings on four doubles and three-of-four from the charity stripe against the Cardinals.
Adding to the score for Colfax was Ed Hydukovich with four points off of two doubles, Jackson Hellmann with six points off of a double, a triple and one-of-two from the line, and Luke Heidorn netted five thanks to a double and a triple.
The Vikings hosted their rivals, the Elk Mound Mounders, last evening, Tuesday December 11, in an early season showdown, and will travel to Glenwood City on Friday, December 14, for a game against the Hilltoppers. Colfax will wrap up its pre-holiday and 2018 portion of its schedule playing in Cornell next Tuesday, December 18.
