THORP — The Vikings hardwood hopes could not have gotten off to a better start last week.
Colfax’s boys went unbeaten in the opening week of their 2018-19 basketball campaign, garnering a trio of wins against Thorp, Ellsworth and Chippewa Falls McDonell Central.
In Colfax’s November 26 season opener, the boys claimed a tight 62-60 road win over Thorp when senior George Scharlau, who recently signed his letter of intent to play basketball next fall with Concordia-St. Paul, sank the game-winning shot with just seconds remaining in the game.
The Vikings carried that momentum with them for the remainder of the week as they defeated both Ellsworth and Chippewa Falls McDonell in less than a 24-hour period.
Colfax hosted Ellsworth last Friday evening, November 30 and scored an impressive 78-60 victory over the Panthers as Ben Thompson netted 27 points in the Viking boys’ victory.
The following afternoon, December 1, the Vikings played McDonell Central in the Northwest Tip-Off Tournament at UW-Stout and emerged a 59-52 winner.
Colfax, 3-0, will head to the land of the Cardinals with an away game in Spring Valley this Thursday, December 6 to christen the D-SC schedule before heading back home to face off against the rival Elk Mound Mounders next Tuesday, December 11.
According to head coach Garrett Maas, the Colfax Vikings had a great game to tip off their season against a very good Thorp squad.
“We jumped out to an early lead and every time Thorp made a run at us, we hit a key shot to build our lead back up a little bit,” commented the Vikings’ coach.
George Scharlau began his senior season scoring 24 points in last Monday evening’s game against the Cardinals. Scharlau was four of seven from the foul line and put up four doubles and four triples. He also led the Vikings with 11 rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Not to be out done, Thorp rallied to take a 41-40 lead during the game, but the Vikings refused to panic and continued to execute plays down the stretch, Maas said.
“Thorp hit two free throws with 2.6 seconds to tie the game, the we ran our ‘home run play’ which is a pass the full length of the court,” Maas explained.
The game winning shot came at the buzzer after Jackson Hellman made a pass to Scharlau who was able to spin around his defender and sink the basket.
Ben Thompson tallied 16 points and Ed Hydukovich finished with seven. Thompson put in six field goal including a pair of treys while Hydukovich had three hoops and a free throw.

The Vikings got the evening starting off a three-point shot from senior player George Scharlau. He went on to score an additional four triples, 2-point bucket and was two-of-two from the foul line, ending up with 19 points.
Ben Thompson was the driving force in Colfax’s win with 27 points throughout the 36-minute contest, putting in four triples and six doubles against the Panthers.
Both the Vikings and the Panthers kept their fouls to a minimum during the first half, but as the game went on the fouls began to plague each of the teams.
Fans in the stands were not disappointed as the second half got underway with parents and students cheering on Colfax and Ellsworth with each basket.
Ed Hydukovich and Zach Rindy also got in the mix putting up seven points a piece. Hydukovich hit a triple in the first half and Rindy was three-for-three from the foul line.

Ben Thompson spearheaded the points for the Vikings getting to the basket for 22 points overall off of three triples and eight doubles.
Senior George Scharlau got in the mix of things putting up a triple and four doubles against McDonell Central last Saturday.

Ed Hydukovich had some success getting to the basket with four doubles and going two of four from the foul line.
“Overall it was a really tough week and we are extremely pleased to be 3-0 heading into conference play,” Maas said.
