Chippewa Falls man travels down wrong way on I-94 causing crash

MENOMONIE — A Chippewa Falls man has been arrested for operating while intoxicated after he traveled down wrong way on Interstate 94 early Friday evening, October 5 near Menomonie and caused a crash that resulted in injury.

Anthony Steves, 52 of Chippewa Falls, was arrested and charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated after he traveled east on the westbound lanes of I-94 near Menomonie and struck another vehicle causing injury to that driver.

The Eau Claire Post of the Wisconsin State Patrol received a report of a vehicle traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes on Interstate 94 near exit 45 at 7:18 p.m. on Friday, October 5.

Before the responding Trooper could intercept the vehicle, a crash occurred with a westbound vehicle. The struck vehicle was disabled in the lane of traffic with the striking (Steve’s) vehicle coming to rest in the median.

The Trooper observed that the operator of the wrong way vehicle, Anthony Steves, was showing signs of impairment. Steves indicated he had been drinking for a couple hours.

Steves had two prior Operating a Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated Convictions. Steves was arrested for Operating a Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated 3rd offense and transported to Dunn County Jail. Steves was also cited for fail to maintain control of his vehicle and driving wrong way on divided highway.

The operator of the struck vehicle indicated he had some pain and was evaluated for those injuries.
