MONDOVI – The Vikings’ first football foray away from the friendly confines of the LP Bjurquist Athletic Complex did not go so well.
After spending the first three weeks of the season playing non-conference competition at home, which included a week two cancellation due to lightning storms, Colfax finally took to the road to open its Dunn-St. Croix conference schedule in Mondovi last Friday.
Although the Vikings had been plagued by miscues and turnovers in their first two contests, they were able to overcome them and their opponents to start 2018 with a pair of victories.
That, however, was not the case in the September 7 gridiron match-up at the home of the Buffaloes.
Colfax coughed up the football five times – all interceptions including one returned for a score – which host Mondovi happily took advantage of.
The Buffaloes put their hoof prints in the end zone three times in the first quarter and twice more in the second to lead 33-6 at the intermission. A gifted Mondovi squad added a rushing and a passing touchdown in the third frame to deliver a 45-6 defeat to the visiting Vikings.
Mondovi jumped to 2-0 in conference and 3-1 overall, marks they share with co-leader Glenwood City. Colfax, meanwhile, lost for the first time this year and is now 0-1 and 2-1.
“We started off the game pretty rough,” stated Matt DeMoe, Colfax head coach.
“We threw two interceptions in the first quarter, leading to a three-score quarter for Mondovi,” added DeMoe. “20 to 0 is a hard hole to climb out of.” Especially against a squad of Mondovi’s caliber which the Vikings’ head coach described as very strong and athletic. “We couldn’t match their speed,” stated DeMoe.
The Buffaloes used that speed and the Vikings’ turnovers to jump out to a early 20-0 advantage.
Mondovi sandwiched a 40-yard Tanner March scoring run and a six-yard touchdown pass from Brennen Christopherson to Carter Johnson around Jackson Falkner’s interception return for six all within a six minute and 45 second span of the opening quarter.
Colfax finally got on the board with its only score of the game with 3:19 to play in the first. Noah Albricht, who had a rough evening passing the ball, connected with Cole Kiekhafer on a six-yard pitch and catch to account for the Vikes six points.
Christopherson tossed a pair of touchdown passes in the second quarter to extend Mondovi’s lead to 33-6 at the half. The Buffaloes’ quarterback hit Johnson for the pair’s second scoring combination on a 20-yard throw and also completed a 33-yard scoring toss to Owen Schultz with just a second left on the first-half clock.
The Mondovi signal caller led the home team to a pair of third-quarter touchdowns to complete the game’s scoring.
Christopherson used his legs to score a TD on a five-yard with 3:12 left in the third and then connected for his second scoring pass – a 10-yard toss – with 36 ticks left in the third.
There was no scoring in the fourth and final quarter.
For Colfax, Noah Albricht finished 18-for-34 for 215 yards, a touchdown and five picks. Trey Hovde caught six of the completions for 56 yards and the Vikes lone touchdown. Jeremy Artist had just 23 yards on 19 hauls to lead Colfax’s ground game.
Mondovi quarterback Brennen Christopherson was an efficient 15-for-20 for 227 yards and four scores to just one interceptions. He completed throws to seven different receivers with Tanner Marsh taking two for 64 yards, Carter Johnson snaring three for 60 yards and two TDs and Owen Schultz grabbing three for two scores and 39 yards.
“Moving forwards, we need to eliminate the turnovers,” concluded Coach DeMoe. “Our team is healthy, and we are looking forward to homecoming this Friday.”
Colfax will welcome winless Boyceville for the annual Homecoming contest this Friday, September 14.
