Vikings’ cross country girls finish fourth in CC Invite, boys take fifth

By Amber Hayden

MARSHFIELD — Colfax’s Cross Country teams made their way to Marshfield on Saturday, September 1 for the Columbus Catholic Invitational where the girls managed a fourth-place finish while the boys placed fifth.

Ten complete teams competed in both the girls’ and boys’ races.

The boys’ squad was led by two-time all-conference performer Luke Heidorn who placed 13th with a time of 19:51.1. Heidorn’s brother Noah followed less than a minute later to finish with a time of 20:18.7, good for 19th place.

“From there we were okay, not great, but okay. The boys faded some late but not as bad as the girls but we have to finish much better,” explained head coach Joe Doucette.

Sawyer Best and Dennis Sonnentag finished 23rd and 29th for the boys with times of 20:50.1 and 21:11.3.

Finishing in 33rd and scoring the last of the points for the boys was Trevor Rothbauer with a time of 21:26.6 mere seconds behind Sonnentag.

The boys finished with a team score of 117.

“We have to get use to hanging in there. Right now we have a lot of people looking good at times during a race, but then struggle and lose ground,” said Doucette.

The girls found themselves in fourth place with 90 points and two girls in the top 15.

“Again I think more good than bad, we have to get in better shape and have to finish races better,” Doucette said of his girls’ races.

“Everyone got slower in the last third of the race, our 3-6 spots were in decent position but all of them struggled late,” stated Doucette. “Its early but we have a long ways to go. All we can do is roll up our sleeves and continue to work.”

Erica Kallstrom finished in seventh place earning a medal for herself with a time of 22:33.2 followed by freshman Jasmine Best who missed the medals after placing 12th in a time of 23:32.5.

Senior Hailey Prince finished with a time of 25:26.3 earning her 25th place in the division for the Lady Vikings.

Emilee Burcham-Scofield and Jillian Bowe rounded out the scoring for the girls in 30th and 37th position with times of 26:05.3 and 26:38.8.

“Right now both teams have looked good in workouts but I do not think we have raced very well yet,” according to Coach Doucette.

Chippewa Falls McDonell Central copped both the boys’ (64) and girls’ (61) team crowns at Saturday’s invitational. The Edgar girls were just a point back in second as were the Athens boys.

The next opportunity for the team will be in Fall Creek this Saturday, September 8 and then three days later on  Tuesday, September 11 at UW-Barron in Rice Lake.
