Colfax grants 3-foot variance for 207 Main Street

By LeAnn R. Ralph

COLFAX  — The Colfax Village Board has granted a variance of three feet for Ron and Marie Swartz, 207 Main Street, to build an addition onto their house.

The addition to the north side of the house will be seven feet from the side yard lot line, and the village’s ordinance requires a setback of 10 feet, said Lynn Niggemann, village administrator-clerk-treasurer, at the Colfax Village Board’s May 14 meeting.

Ron and Marie Swartz are in the process of purchasing half a lot next door, but the process is going more slowly than they anticipated, and they would like to get started on construction now, Niggemann said.

The Colfax Zoning Board of Appeals held a public hearing on the request for a variance May 3.

Doris Tuschl and Jeff Peterson, who are neighbors of the property in question, were in favor of Ron and Marie Swartz adding on to their primary residence.

According to the minutes from the May 3 meeting, the addition will be 18 feet by 20 feet and will contain a master bedroom and a bathroom.

The Zoning Board of Appeals unanimously approved making a recommendation to the village board to grant the variance requested by Ron and Marie Swartz.

Mike Kiekhafer is chair of the Colfax Zoning Board of Appeals, and members of the board include Mark Mosey, Rich Bautsch, Gene Gibson and Jason Johnson.

Johnson was absent from the meeting.

In what may have been a record amount of a time for a Zoning Board of Appeals meeting containing a public hearing, the May 3 meeting was called to order at 7 p.m. and adjourned at 7:10 p.m.

The Colfax Village Board unanimously approved a motion to grant the variance as recommended by the Zoning Board of Appeals.

Gary Stene serves as village president. Other village trustees who voted in favor of the variance included Mark Halpin, David Wolff, Annie Jenson, Margaret Burcham and Keith Burcham.

Village Trustee Carey Davis was absent from the meeting.
